Had a similar reaction from my elderly dog when I bought her a lovely soft bed as she was arthritic. She never did use it and is now in puppy heaven.

My Labrador would always know it was a special day when we washed his bed and made it nice and clean each week, he'd get excited and protective of it since he knew it was all for him.
