Hey, how ya doin’? I hope you’re doing well. This is the Insanity of Daredevil (2003), or rather, The Insane Story of Daredevil (2003). Making this video on Mark Steven Johnson and his Daredevil Director’s Cut was a joy for me, for HiTop Films. What is the correct way to title this movie? Ben Affleck’s Daredevil? Daredevil 2003? How do people refer to it? No idea. Seriously, though, this felt a return to form in a lot of ways. I love talking about the Behind The Scenes of my childhood favorites. Maybe I should only create Daredevil Video Essays. That would be fun. Anyways, I love so much of this movie and what they tried to do with Matt Murdock. Enjoy this crazy deep dive into the Deleted Scenes, the Behind the Scenes, all the scenes. I’m exhausted, HiTop must rest.
Much love to you all.

One of my favorite Directors, George Lucas said it best that "It's not about how well you can make a movie, it's about how well can you do it under the circumstances because there is always circumstances. And you can't use that as an excuse, you can't put a title card talking about all the problems... you have to show them the movie." And seeing that every single problem on set, everything that could go wrong did go wrong, still making a cohesive and almost faithful tale is truly inspiring, even if the movie is less than stellar.

You can never make me hate this movie. I have too much nostalgia for the 2000s era of superhero media
  • @rhetiq9989
That was probably my favorite “Hey…how ya doin” intro by far.
  • This film is CRIMINALLY underrated, this and the 2004 Punisher film.
  • I was today years old when I discovered that that giant water tank from Daredevil 2003 was a sensory deprivation tank meant to give Matt Murdock a short and selfish reprieve from his responsibility. I just thought his ears hurt, hell I didnt even know there was a directors cut. Now im searching online and ebay for a copy of this cut so I can enjoy it. Thankyou @HiTopFilms for letting me know that his childhood favorite really was a passion project that suffered from capitalism. I knew there was a great story hiding in those early 2000s action film bones.

Alex/HiTop, if you haven't already, you need to listen to the commentary track Avi Arad and Mark Steven Johnson recorded together for the Director's Cut of Daredevil. There's multiple times during that commentary that Mark is talking about the differences between the Theatrical & Director's Cut when Avi will interrupt and say "Yes, that was a writing problem". That was when I first realized that I wanted Avi Arad far far away from any superhero character I was invested in.

Honestly my favorite Marvel movie. I just love how weird, stupid and crazy but somewhat deep the movie is. Like no superhero movie would be like that today. Me and my friend have been watching that movie once a year for 3 years now. We always have a great time.

I feel like if the Directors cut had been released in theaters at the time, this movie would’ve gotten more a-claim and be more fondly remembered

Man, I hope Mark Steven Johnson sees this. I need him to know that someone got his vision
  • @WarpingFist
I miss the way superhero movies were like in the early 2000's man. We need someone to make a film with the same kind of style/feeling.
  • @aaronpingiaro
The Bullseye at the airport scene is an absolute classic
  • @malikmoss5519
The hooded Daredevil suit was fire tho! Then they had him in the durag with the horns! The costume designer was definitely cooking
  • I honestly feel like Kingpin and Daredevil portrayed as they are here are underrated. And the costuming for both of them is top notch. There’s just something so great about that DD costume.

Honestly thanks HiTop, Ive also loved Daredevil since the Spiderman Animated series and the 2003 film. As a kid I didn't know anything about the failures of the film and just enjoyed it as it was a film about Daredevil my favorite hero. However, after so many years of people bashing the movie I was kinda disappointed and ashamed but you bringing up the directors cut has inspired me to go watch it and give Mark Steven Johnson some appreciation for his love towards the characters and his story thanks.

Definitely one of my favorite CBMs. It's wacky, but also full of heart. Ben kills it as Matt and was super dedicated to his performance as a blind person. Also obligatory watch the Director's Cut.
