Despite Wolverine's many appearances in video games, none have truly captured the feeling of being Wolverine. Raven Software acknowledged this, and set out to the make THE Wolverine game in 2009. The game began as an original concept, but was later transitioned into a movie tie-in game to coincide with the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, starring Hugh Jackman. The movie was ultimately deemed a disappointment amongst fans, but surprisingly, the game was viewed as a big success. In this video, we'll discuss the origins of this Wolverine game, and why its so beloved by fans. We'll also delve into aspects of the film, and how it potentially held the game back.

As a special bonus, I've also included snippets of an interview that I had with @cbake76 who was Manger, Licensed Games at the time for Marvel. Chris shared a lot of interesting insights from his time with the game before its release, and I really enjoyed my conversation with him.

  • If you'd like to see my full interview with Chris Baker, you can do so on his channel via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QT3qxQKuMew There were a lot of interesting details he described that I couldn't fit into this video, so I'd recommend checking it out if you're looking for more info on the game, as well as some of the other Marvel games Chris has worked on.

It's so crazy how this game is such a polar opposite to the usual movie based video game. Generally there's a good deal of care given to the film and the game is just an afterthought to get some quick money. Here the game devs clearly cared about Wolverine and Jackman still gives as much heart as he can with his performance.
  • I really hope Marvel's wolverine is rated m and has a similar healing mechanic like in this game where you can see his bones and flesh when he takes damage!

Logan being brothers with Creed is one of the few changes that actually make sense. In a world where there are so many mutants, and all of them having such vastly different mutations... what are the odds that two guys who grew up in the same time period, and location, just happened to have the same mutant healing factor, but not related? Sorry but canon is less believable in this case.

I hope insomniac takes a lot of inspiration from this hidden gem of a game.

One of the best movie tie in games. Can’t wait for Marvel’s Wolverine by Insomniac

This was my first Rated M game at like 8 years old...I didn't put it down even though I only played it at my cousin's house. Even more...imagine how the new Wolverine game will play since Spider-Man PS4 was basically a love letter to the best Spider-Man games out there.
  • i remember when this game came out and blew me away. i saw origins as an early leak where the SFX were not complete and i was disappointed. this game was everything that movie should have been

Quick story: I actually watched this movie as a kid and I liked it a lot with Wolverine being my favorite superhero (along with the Incredible Hulk) and all. Got my dad to buy me a used copy while we were on vacation with my family, my grandmother and older sister watched me play and completely shred people's bodies apart. I distinctively remember my grandma gasping when she saw me spike a guy on the floor. 🤣

This game actually looks pretty cool. I wonder how Insomniac's Wolverine game is going to turn out.

The “Fight yourself” arena was my hands down my favorite part of the game. I had the most fun in those mirror matches, just seeing two Wolvies have at it with an evenly matched strength and capabilities

The reason destroying or damaging wolverine's brain works at wiping's his memories could be 2 reasons: 1 is because his healing factor isn't perfect and healing back memories is nigh impossible. Only the tissue required to form the electrical neural connection to form new memories can regenerate, not the old tissue that had old memories. Reason 2 is that his healing factor does factor in his memories and trauma and "heals" him from it by straight up giving him amnesia to not have to endure the same pain as before when the trauma happened.

That game was great. Only issue was that it didn't have replay value... like the Deadpool game. I wish they had a New Game Plus option or something where you can keep your stats.

"and no Dinosaurs either" me suddenly filled with sad feelings for the genius idea of facing Dinosaurs as Wolverine.
  • @DancyHercules3
Playing this many years ago, I never realized the sentinel cutscenes were hint of a potential sequel. Such a pain that we never got to see it happen.
  • @sleepy9102
I loved the ending with frost in the movie. “Walk until your feet bleed, then keep walking.”

The sad/ironic thing is that on paper the concept of Weapon XI sounds pretty cool... if he hadn't been Wade Wilson. The concept of amalgamating several mutant powers into one uber weapon sounds like it could've been a really cool and intimidating enemy, and if they'd made an original character, or pulled an Aldrich Killian and taken a rather obscure name from the comics an slapped it on an OC, it could've been really cool. Instead they used Deadpool, despite it being nothing like him. It's a key lesson for games, TV and Film adaptations, the In Name Only trope works on obscures who barely anyone knows ad absolutely no one cares about, when used on popular characters it just makes everyone angry.
  • I think the reason the adamantium bullet erased his memory is because it was strong enough to pierce his skull and destroy his brain giving him amnesia because even though his brain healed his memories wouldn’t
  • Watching this makes me even more excited for the Insomniac game. I hope they borrow the regeneration system from this game. I also hope they embrace other aspects of the Marvel universe. I think having Wolverine interact with characters like Hulk (for example) would help set it apart from past entries.

I’m surprised Marvel/Disney hasn’t taken advantage of the various Marvel games that came out during the Xbox 360\PS3 era, and hired a developer to remaster/port them to current consoles and PC.
