"It's not forced diversity or pandering, it's just the real world you live in finally being reflected in the fictional worlds we escape to..." Absolutely. Solid video.

As a casual gamer, it's so crazy how white gamers be racist and homophobic, then get mad when black, non-white, ect, and queer people have spaces where it's just for them and they don't have to deal with bigotry. They say it's segregation but their the reason why we create those spaces in the first place.
  • @bengraven
Saw a meme the other day: “gamers like edgy humor when it’s racist - making fun of religion or the police/military isn’t nearly as funny and kind of offensive”

To the ableist concerns, a big minecraft youtuber GoodTimesWithScar, who is in a wheelchair, went to i believe TwitchCon not too long ago and was going to compete is MCC (minecraft tourney for youtubers/streamers) and he had to actually change teams because the coordinators didn't think about putting in a ramp for him to get to where his team is sitting???? It's wild to me that even an influencer can't even get accommodation for a con they were invited to! I cant imagine for small events for the average person

"If you do something without thinking, it's because you're used to doing it." SAY IT AGAIN
  • @Neillan
If it was "just a word", they absolutely would not care about using it so much.

29:41 I do want to mention that women have been in the games industry since the beginning and made up a good chunk of the labor force. the reason we retroactively assume it was just guys is because (especially in japan) women who worked on a game were forced to use male pseudonyms in the credits. a lot of pivotal games were spearheaded by women, and then they were erased from history.

I've never considered the loneliness of suburbia as being connected to gaming but it makes so much sense and has crossed a lot of wires for me that has helped me understand my relationship with gaming. Seems so obvious in hindsight too
  • @borginburkes1819
The amount of people who reminisce about gaming in the 2000s specifically because racist humor was accepted is alarming af. then they get mad when you call them racist

There's bunch of reasons why I now prefer 1 player games like visual novels more than those online games. The negative energies from the online gamers is beyond
  • @Haobey
Fun fact: Exaggerated swagger of a black teen was written by a black person
  • @WarPoodle-pc5wu
Sometimes i hate that i love video games so much. The racism is and has been obvious and rampant since the beginning. They also attack women who game constantly too. But the people who are accepting in the gaming community are some of the best people ever! Sadly you have to wade through a boundles sea of racism and sexims to find them.

My first encounter with nerd racism was in an anime roleplay chatroom. Dude was mad his gf left him for a brother and he got mad then threatened to lynch me when he learned I was black; I was in middle school
  • @pchii_
Still thinking about that study that had shown that there was a correlation between bigotry in vc and poor performance in video games 😭😭😭😭
  • @apehawk
I've seen so many reddit posts of people getting banned in a game for saying slurs and then using the excuse "people today are too sensitive, they wouldn't survive an old cod lobby". They say this as if it was a good thing.

"BY HOW YOU BREATHE" IS THE MOST ON POINT DEPICTION OF ONLINE RACISM FORREAL. I got called the N word online and ask the same question and 10 year old kid got on his and said "cause you breathe like one." and it was the most out of pocket shit I ever heard.

Anytime I tried to have a chat with my bro about how black people are represented in various games, it’s always “it’s a game it’s not deep” đŸ€Ł. Now I have a 1hr video essay to validate my opinion, now what đŸ˜€. In all seriousness, thank you for introducing us to Dr. Kishonna Gray!

It was a black person who said Miles had exaggerated swagger. It feels like everyone missed that
