Spider-Man 2 was an ambitious and revolutionary game that shaped what we expect from Spider-Man games today. It was the first to introduce webs that attach to buildings, and it included an open world New York City for you to explore. Although this is pretty standard nowadays, it was a pretty big deal back in 2004. It also features the voices of the movies cast, including Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, and Alfred Molina. It's considered to be one of the best superhero games every made and is highly regarded amongst fans. So now, nearly 2 decades after its release, we'll return back to world of Spider-Man 2 and discuss how it holds up today.

I like how Doc Oc is a master in prosthetics, but lets his friend just walk around without an arm.

This game was my therapy after the long torturous days of getting bullied at school. It felt so cool to swing around New York and beat up thugs. It was as close as to getting to be Spidey as one possibly could. It will forever live in my heart as a game that got me through the tough times.

I love how they clearly sacrificed polygons on some parts of black cat's model to make sure they could detail an important area

“oh no! Doctor Connor’s class…” the whole line makes me giggle everytime

If there's one thing I've learned over these Marvel retrospective videos, it's that having a creepy carnival level is almost guaranteed to be one of AlwaysNerdy's favorite level.

This Black Cat will always be the best version. Her voice is soft but slightly gravelly and very human. Shame they didn't show her more in the game and sequels

i played this game for endless hours as a kid, glad someone is finally doing a retrospective on it

“Having trouble with your laser heard they got pills for that” -spidey. that quote flew over my head as a kid lol

I used to get overwhelmed with boss battles as a kid, so Mysterio’s health bar fake out following the one punch take down cracked my ten year old self up alot more than it should have. 😂

I always felt like Tobey's Spider-Man was characterized better in the video games than in the actual films lol. He's a lot wittier and more like comic Peter in general in the games.

In a better alternate dimension, Activision ain’t a shitty publisher and rereleases all classic Spider-Man games on current gen consoles.

The Mysterio levels are always super bittersweet for me. They're my favorite levels, but getting to them marks a near-end point for the game, so I always get upset that the game isn't longer.

I always felt that this and TASM were the strongest movie-based Spider-Man games. Especially how the TASM game functioned as a sequel to the movie as opposed to it's own adaptation of the film.

I love Bruce Campbell's narration in this game. He is so hilarious.
  • @VarjoPira
When Activision wasn't a lost cause for a publisher. Think Tobey's more melancholy voice acting fits right in with Peter's sense of conflict and fatigue.

Damn if the black cat we got in this game is the less sexy version, I can’t even fathom what the original would’ve been like. Truly a tragic loss for all mankind.

Always liked Black Cat the most out of Spidey's love interests. Great review!

"Activision asked to tone it down a little" Man, times sure do change

The cgi cutscenes are amazing for a ps2 era game. Imagine if they remastered this game and made the whole thing look like that. This is still hands down my favorite Spider-Man game
  • This game makes you realize how much more interesting the movies could have been with Black Cat. Also that I apparently never got anywhere in this game, I remember absolutely none of this. I know I generally spent most of my time just swinging around, but I thought I played some of it.
