As far as live-action superheroes go, fans today don't know how good they've got it. With both Zack Snyder's Justice League and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier coming out recently, it's time to look back to a time when many had to make do with much less sophisticated superheroes. In the seventies, big-screen superheroes were MIA. Things were a bit better on the small screen, with shows like Wonder Woman and The Incredible Hulk doing well in the ratings. This led to the creation of this week's Gone But Not Forgotten subject, The Amazing Spider-Man. A decidedly low-tech take on the Marvel superhero, this short-lived series starred the likable Nicholas Hammond (The Sound of Music and recently Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time in Hollywood) as Peter Parker, aka The Amazing Spider-Man. Join us as we examine this campy but often endearing show.

Hey folks! If you want us to feature your forgotten TV show send us a email with your suggestions. We may feature it out n a future episode. Our suggestion email is GBNFSeries@gmail.com/
  • As a kid watching reruns of this in the late 80s...it was AMAZING. I friggin loved it
  • I can't ever forget that he swung from the same building in every episode time and time...and time again.

Those scenes of the stuntman actually climbing up the side of a skyscraper, shown in a long shot, stayed with me since childhood. Yes, upon recent rewatch the green screen bits do stand out more than they did in the 80s but the rest of the practical moves are unbelievably good.

I'm old enough to remember both the Electric Company Spiderman and the 1977 TV series. Loved them both! Dang it I am old.
  • @Squicx
If he and the Japanese Spider-Man meet up in a live action Spider-Verse movie, IT WOULD BE AMAZING!!!!
  • @DougUnfunny
Nicolas Hammond face was inspiration for the 90s Animated Spider man Series Peter Parker.
  • So, we live in a world where the 1970's Japanese Spider-Man is easier to find than the 1970's US Spider-Man show? Who'd a thunk it?!

The theme for this show was amazing. It sounded like a double dragon level.

I really want an official copy of this on Dvd or Blu-ray.

Man i loved this as a kid. I was "lucky" to be born in the 70s and shows like this, The Six Million Dollar Man, The Incredible Hulk, Battlestar, Buck Rogers, Space 1999 etc where mana from heaven for a kid.

I love this show in all its campy glory. I have it in on VHS, laserdisc, and still have the copy I taped off of TBS from the 80s.

Nicholas Hammond deserves, deserves, deserves to get a cameo in the upcoming Spidey flick.

Even with its many flaws I absolutely loved this show growing up. Being a child of the 80s I rented the pilot episode at my local video store and I must’ve watched it a thousand times. Even though our local video store didn’t have every episode available, the episodes I wasn’t able to rent were shown on tv sporadically allowing me to video tap the episodes I hadn’t seen. Like you I actually really enjoyed Nicholas Hammond’s portrayal of Peter Parker and I thought the Spidey stunts preformed by Fred Waugh were great considering he did them in real life. I didn’t mind that the shows producers didn’t have the budget to bring Spider-Man’s rogues gallery to life. With that being said my one complaint is that Spidey didn’t do any wise cracking when interacting with the thugs he fought throughout the series. I also thought Micheal Pataki was great as Captain Barbera and he should’ve been cast to play J. Jonah Jameson. If he had a mustache he would look just like him. Overall I think they made the best with what they had and I’ll always have very fond memories watching this show. This was a great video and I’m glade you gave the 1970s Live Action Spiderman tv series some love and attention.
  • Bill Bixby's death was absolutely the reason why there was no cross over. You have to remember the last TV movie of the Hulk premiered in 1990 (Death of the Incredible Hulk). Bixby had every intention of bringing Banner and the Hulk back, but his illness soon after shut him down to concentrate on his own personal life, so those projects, including the crossover with Spiderman, were never put into production. Bixby's TV movies were what kept the Hulk alive long after that series was over, so this crossover would bring back Spiderman as well. It would have been tremendous.

Nicholas Hammond was the perfect '70s/Bronze-Age of Comics, Spider-Man. He was great as Peter. Smart but not nerdy, shy but not a pathetic loser. That's the way Peter Parker was in the 1970's. Also the infamous cocky, sarcastic, humor of Peter Parker/Spider-Man is there if you listen for it. Parker's struggle with money and trying to do the right thing despite who he might hurt is in the late '70s tv show.
  • There does need to be a live action Spider-Man show! A big problem with Spidey is that he feels rushed in his own films and a tv show format could better for mysterious, build up, character development, and drama.

Another comic book connection : Ellen Bry was one of Margot Kidder’s stunt doubles in Superman and Superman 2. She’s the figure who bounces from the awning to the fruit stand in the Donner cut of Superman 2.

Fun fact: David White, who played J. Jonah Jameson in the pilot, was Darrin Stephens' boss, Larry Tate in Bewitched. Robert F. Simon, his replacement in the regular series, played Darrin's dad, Frank Stephens.
