SF says homeless population is at lowest level in years. So why are some costs going up?

San Francisco has been trying to revive its lackluster image. ABC7 News reporter Lyanne Melendez walked through the downtown area to see who and what is keeping San Francisco from falling into a slump and why the city is paying millions for these services. abc7ne.ws/3UVyXY7

Here's a fun game: Drive to downtown SF. Count all the tents/vangrants/zombies/etc.. betcha reach a number north of 100 in no time. Then try and park your car. Then try to shop at a drug store where, if it's even open, 100% of the products are locked up. Then, get back to your car and pray it hasn't been bipped.

Which streets are you talking about? They migrate from different neighborhoods.

Seems like PR for Mayor Breed's election campaign
  • In America, we judge the level of our compassion by the amount of money we are willing to waste failing to solve a problem.

They are in areas now they were not before like Nob Hill , Richmond District, Castro, etc. They have just spread out. The problem is worse than ever.

I don't think "Building a Better Bay Area" is working.

$43 million to hand out snacks! OMG this is a band aid. It doesn't solve the problems!

What data? Give us a link to your source. Homelessness is at record highs, source: our own eyes.

Of course, the bums moved to other cities in the East Bay, like East San Francisco.

I mean if Narcan didn't exist, some of that drug infested problem would deal with itself.
  • @tierrabatido
The numbers are always low when you don't report them! Drive around with a video camera and you'll see for your self.

I added up all the costs and its still less than 10% of the budget of the police.
  • Can't anyone do math?? How many dollars per person is being spent? it's more than most people earn working 5 days per week...

This is not true, I work in SF specifically on Montgomery Street and I feel like the homelessness seemed to increase within the past month. I read on the subreddit for SF that some homeless man assaulted a delivery driver right where my train station. It seems to be getting more unsafe with these "crazy homeless" people roaming the safe street of Montgomery Street. I guess these weirdos are getting kicked out of other places that were dangerous.
