At 24 years old Rick Johnson was on top of the world in 1989. At this point The Bad Boy was already a seven-time AMA National Champion and the all-time career leader in SX wins before a practice crash with a privateer cost him most of his outdoor season that year. Many wondered if he would be able to race again at all. But Ricky did return, and with a vengeance, returning to the very same track where he suffered the devastating injury the year prior, fighting his way through the field to battle it out with his teammate and defending champion Jeff Stanton. Enjoy this fantastic race-long battle to the finish!

  • I was at this race. I recorded the whole thing on VHS and still have it. (now on DVD) That 2nd moto was the best finish I ever seen. The following week, I was at Daytona and watched RJ break his wrist for the last time. He is a super human.

Gotta give RJ props for coming back after that horrendous injury. Truly a beast.

O' the days gone by. I had an '89 XR250R, suspension as smooth as a prom queen's thigh, an acid wash denim jacket and color coordinated pants, white sneakers and a mullet that would have made Billy Ray Cyrus quit and go home. Beer was cheap, I had six pack abs, and girls liked the bike. The smell of dirt baking on my exhaust header still comes flooding into my mind, when I take a deep breath and think back to those days. I've been responsible, been important, made money and paid my dues, but things were better when Ricky was King.

Larry Huffman always goes a bit Sam Kinison when announcing.

Hmmm, He said the bikes have more hp to weight ratio which is more than a top fuel dragster. I think he needs to do his math. Not sure what it is but a top fuel dragster is around 3000 lbs but has 13,000 hp during this time

Great video! But, never could and never will be able to stand Larry on the announcers mic…..he’s terrible. 🤮

Bike's handled like 💩compared to now. Super soft, bouncing all over the place.
