How to Diagnose Bad Fuel in a Riding Lawnmower

Today we'll be diagnosing a John Deere L110 riding lawn mower that's running rough.
Instead of draining the entire fuel tank and replacing it with fresh fuel, I 1st need to diagnose whether or not the customers fuel is bad, and if that is what's causing the engine to run poorly.
By using a small test fuel tank of my own design, I can isolate my customers fuel. If the engine runs better with my fuel hooked up, then the source of the issue will have been identified.

Very well explained and simple diagnosis. When I was in my apprenticeship, my boss made me make my own siphon to hook on my blow gun. I used it to clean either coolants or diesel fuels out of heads, top of pistons or blocks. Still use it on the small engines. I like the idea of the wire to stiffen tubes. Have a good week. Rick

Well done sir. Amazing how poorly that engine was running with the old fuel compared to the fresh 91 Octane no ethanol fuel up put in your test fuel tank. This method can easily be used on any engine even if gravity fed instead of by a fuel pump. This condition is always the problem on fuel operated generators since they rarely get used (having normally a fuel tank of old broken down fuel) but if the customer has been using no ethanol fuel then there will be no ethanol build up in the carb and it will not require a carb clean.

I like the remote fuel tank. A great tool to have. No stone left unturned in your diagnosis. What I would want you to do if I was paying for the repair. What I would do if I did the repair myself. Quality counts. Good work.

nice job....lots of great tips for small engine repairs..

Thank you for this, wish I would have found this awhile back but this helped me tremendously.

Your own fresh fuel. Nice. This is explained beautifully. That was a great idea to bench grind a custom wrench to make thinner to get to places. You lost me with draining the old gas. I thought there would be way to just let it drain out like oil.

👍🏼my LA120 is on the charger now. I suggest changing the Fuel Filter too in this case.I got a Full Jug of gas from last October!!hope for the best!!expect the worse🙏🏼

The problem I'm running into for my John Deere E100 that won't start is the fuel is not pulling into the fuel pump from the fuel filter. Now, the solenoid on the bottom of the carb doesn't make the clicking sound when I turn the key from off to on. I've taken carb apart and cleaned it and the little plunger in the solenoid is free moving, so not gummed up by bad fuel. With that not activating, will it keep the mower from starting? If so, would it be the solenoid itself that needs replaced even though it's free moving or the little electrical harness connected to it since it doesn't activate with key turn?

Brilliant!

Great video. Can a bad fuel pump cause the mower to run slower ?

Good Job

Should gas flow out of the tank fuel line when disconnecting the line from the fuel filter?

Informative video..question for ya..my jd e120 ran out of gas..filled it up and it wont turn over now.fuel will shoot from the pump when i remove hose so im pretty sure theres no issue with fuel flow.the gas i used was only a few weeks old, used it in my push mower and it worked fine..any idea what the issue could be?i didnt try taking the carb bowl down yet
