A water pump has many uses. But did you know that it can also be used to help octopuses shed the skin on their suckers? Neither did we! What started out as free massage turned into a full blown exfoliating session.

In today's episode of Octopus Reacts, we placed a water pump in the experiment tank. We opted for a 0.5 HP pump. Enough pressure to get Albert's attention without stressing him. We were all smiles when we noticed he was using the pump to help rid himself of the dead skin on his suckers. There's never a dull day when you get to spend time with these eight armed wonders.

This little guy is brilliant!🐙 Not only was he using that to clean off his tentacles I believe he was just playing enjoying it! Absolutely fascinating creatures I love octopus! Peace to all you octopus lovers out there!✌😀🐙

Aaawww Albert went to the spa!! 🐙🚿 I never knew their suckers shed skin. I’ve seen enrichment videos where someone will take a sprinkling can and sprinkle water over the surface and the octopus goes to the surface and turns himself upside down so his suckers get a shower.

Next should be, “octopus reacts to toy boat”, so the octo can be the kraken.
  • @mho...
that settles it, every Octoaquarium needs to have one of these!

I wonder how he would react to an air pocket that allowed him to exit the water? You know how zoos sometimes have those bubbles where kids can pop up in the center of an animal exhibit? Something dome shaped like that where Albert could pop up out of the water and into an air pocket.

Octopus: Wow! Thanks humans! This is the coolest thing you’ve added to my tank since my octopus eye den! :D
  • His color changed so noticeably after he played in the jet. Almost like that peach color is a sigh of relief/joy.

Aww, will you be giving other octopus a go on the pump, too? :D

Having worked with marine mammals in my early career, I’ve seen bottlenose dolphin use a running water faucet, (keeping the tank at constant volume), to do things to itself that isn’t really safe for work viewing, if you know what I mean. I was stunned when I learned what they (yes, they (when one figured it out she just had to share)). The other trainers and I were hysterically laughing when we figured out what they were doing. Anyway, I commented here because I’m so impressed with just how resourceful and clever these highly intelligent organisms are. (And yes, I’m well aware that 🐙 are not marine mammals) just had to share. Love the vids. Thank you OctoLab!!

Amazing creatures. I recommend that everyone see a movie I recently viewed, if you already haven't, My Octopus Teacher. Great documentary. Really opened my eyes to octopi. Just amazing creatures, I just love them. So intelligent. And so misunderstood.

Picture this: a long video or compilation of him dreaming and changing colors, with meditation/soothing music ... I would literally watch that every night before bed

I hope all the octopuses are well cared for outside of the experiments/videos.. they are just too cute and precious!! 🤗🥰😘
