It’s always fun running mirror tests. Watching animals react to themselves in a mirror is fascinating. Octopus mirror tests provide a lot of insight on the intelligence of this magnificent creature. This is our second mirror test and it was requested by Youtube user DareBird.

Request:
I really enjoyed the mirror test video and would like to see more of them! Can you guys run a mirror test with Arnold? If possible, please use a bigger mirror than the one you used in the “Octopus Gets Angry at His Own Reflection in the Mirror” Video? Thanks!

Human: this is a mirror test Octopus: Ok. It's flat and quite sucker-able Human: passed

Put the mirror center of the tank so he can inspect back of it

Thank you for accepting my request Octolabtv team. Arnold is magnificent! I love you guys! Keep up the good work!

I wonder if he's disappointed that the reflection feels no different than the rest of the tank? 🤔
  • @allisfaith
Looks like he’s trying to get behind the mirror

I'm curious if an octopus could figure out how to use a touch-screen? Maybe convey some simple abstract puzzles with symbolic images, and if it gives the right answer it receives a food reward. Would be interesting to see how well that works. (From what I understand they're fairly intelligent animals, but with short life spans there is quite a limitation to what they can possibly learn.)

You can see that he is beginning to understand its himself by the second move in. Less inquisitive and moreso studying the mirroring movements. Then off to bed, to think this over. I get it, but I have no clue why this happens, I think I'll sleep on it.

I think this wonderful octopus after all these tests should be released to a nice coral reef for rehab.

This soundtrack is clearly a result from another test. Octopus with few keyboards and drumpads.

Place the mirror in the center of the tank, away from any walls. This way, your octopus will be able to tell that the mirror is only two-dimensional, and not think that it is a door to another tank.

I d like to see the test again but with a freestanding mirror he could "walk" around. I noticed he was reaching behind the mirror. I wonder if he was: 1. Generally looking for a way through the tank 2. Trying to touch the other octopus behind the glass 3. Testing that what he saw matched what he felt.

Loving the uploads! Would be even great if each video started with a pop-up box describing the name (and maybe breed, age) of each octopus staring in that particular video. Would help get to know the stars of the show better (just my opinion ofc)

I loved his guy's beautiful, balletic arm movements. Also, just sitting back and watching that mirror for four minutes? I bet a lot of stuff was going on in its head! SO cool.

"our octopus will sit and stare at its reflection for up to 4 minutes' ... Octopus: I'm lonely.
  • @NewMessage
Some days I could use 8 arms to get my hair to do what I want it to.
  • I'm wondering...can he see his reflection in the tank glass at all and if so, does he ever react to it? If given enough time, would he figure out that the mirror image is his? He's such a beautiful little guy. ❤🐙
