Welcome to an all new series on OctolabTV. Octopus Reacts!
Watching an octopus react to an everyday object for the first time is always interesting. It's fascinating to watch them explore new objects. We thought that this is something our viewers would enjoy and we'll surely learn more about octopuses by watching them react to these objects for the first time.

We'll be posting an Octopus Reacts! video every Sunday at 2:00pm Eastern time. We're also going to need your input on the objects in question so get your thinking caps on! We can't wait to hear your ideas for future episodes of Octopus Reacts!

  • Wake up Sunday morning to a traffic cone in your pad.
We've all had Saturday nights like that.

Awww he hugged the cone. I want an octopus to give me a hug
  • @MarkTrombly
I never thought that watching an octopus get used to a traffic cone could be so relaxing. Wonderful choice of music too.
  • I love the way he discovers the object then sits back to consider it awhile before moving in to tentatively touch it a few times, then just goes for it.
  • @NewMessage
Ok, he yields fine.. but those hand signals are confusing.
  • @blueeyes6852
Closer and closer. Then one arm accidentally' glides by and touches the object. Every pass after that, the little Octopus gets a bit closer...really fascinating to watch.
    Thank you ! 🌺

He would really like if cone was turned on it’s side so he could climb in.
  • @TheAcquibajo
She made that cone her friend! Adorable to watch. 🐙

OCTOPUS: Oh Man, I must have been hammered last night. I do NOT remember bring this home.

What’s not to love about cephalopods? What WONDERFUL creatures! I LOVE’em all! Thank you.
  • @tambalini1160
Interesting idea for a series. Would like to see how they react to a plushy octo toy maybe??
  • @tamray7952
So many different postures (love the one beginning at 1:40) that I can just picture what may be going on in that octo mind. At least in my anthropomorphic way. Love the “embrace”!
  • @Zekiran
When they spread out like that on the wall, is that signalling anything in particular? Is it because they're trying to look big, intimidate their 'foe', or ? omg love those little tentacle curls at 1:57.
  • I love the way it carefully sizes up the traffic cone before touching it , very graceful in its movements. Highly intelligent creatures. 💖🐙💖🐙💖

Fascinating. A few swims past, then chill. Then swim past, spread out all your arms to full length, watch for reaction. Swim by and touch, watch for reaction. Swim by and touch a little more, watch for reaction. Decide it’s harmless, go in for a hug, watch for reaction. Hug some more, just get comfy and enjoy strange new thing. So amazing. I love them.
  • I literally click faster for octopus than humans- ands that’s because I’m terrified of their intelligence
  • @Corgisaurus-Rex
This was adorable and fascinating. You could see it gradually working up to interacting with it. I wonder if the interaction would've been different if the traffic cone was a different size or color.
  • IMO, they are not "colorblind", they simply perceive color in a more advanced way than we yet understand, almost like a separate sense.
"Octopuses, squid and other cephalopods are colorblind – their eyes see only black and white – but their weirdly shaped pupils may allow them to detect color and mimic the colors of their background, according to a father/son team of researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard University.Jul 5, 2016" https://news.berkeley.edu/2016/07/05/weird-pupils-let-octopuses-see-their-colorful-gardens/

Human: passes by/ignores 100s of traffic cones
Octopus: gives hugs to 1st cone he ever sees
