'The politics of Thatcher and the allure of Peron' – Venezuela's new firebrand | SpectatorTV

This weekend Venezuelans will go to the polls and will have a choice between the incumbent President Nicolas Maduro – Hugo Chavez's number two – and Maria Corina Machado, the stylish 56-year-old firebrand who mixes the crowd-pulling allure of Evita Peron with the politics of Margaret Thatcher.

Machado is showing the world how opposition politicians can fight an autocrat. When Maduro tried to thwart her campaign by banning her from taking domestic flights, she drove between her rallies on a motorcycle. When he then banned her from running as a candidate in this weekend's presidential election, she found a retired diplomat to run as her proxy. Without even being on the ballot, can she bring down Maduro’s socialist regime?

The Spectator's Editor Fraser Nelson speaks to Dr Paola Romero, philosophy teacher at the London School of Economics.

Neither Peron nor Thatcher. Those old comparisons don't fit Maria Corina Machado at all. She is a true leader of these turbulent times. For certain, she'll be, by far, much better leader for Venezuela than Sunak was, or Starmer is, for the declining UK.

I lived in Venezuela for 5 years under Chavez and Maduro, as well as followed the country closely for the past 15+ years. This is the finest summary of the current situation that I have ever seen. Hope was dead in Venezuela for many many years and all of a sudden...... I am afraid to be disappointed once again but maybe.... Thank you Dr. Romero
  • They tried Socialism, then they looked at Argentina, and then they all turned Libertarian.

I think inflations is causing the current situation we already have now, imagine investing $.5000 and getting a return of $.31,500 bi weekly trading crypto, our leaders is not the solution to our problem cause they're the problem. you can't get rid of corruption in a system built on corruption. The best way to survive the current recession and hardship is to spend and invest wisely.

God help Venezuela. Thatcher was an unmitigated disaster for the UK. A wrecking ball.
