I hated this storyline so much because it’s the exact opposite of who Xerxes really was. There are artifacts upon artifacts from Persepolis that STRONGLY indicate he was a hero, a man who cared for his people, even a hunter of demons that plagued his empire (according to a really cool bench now behind glass at UChicago). He even delayed his campaign against Greece—considered just dropping the whole thing—because he was so enamored with his new wife, so in love with her, he didn’t want to leave her side.
