This is the definitive review of the Toyota GR Corolla, for the first time tested against the GR Yaris, the FL5 11th-generation Honda Civic Type R, and Mk8 Volkswagen Golf R — all with manual transmissions.

As always, award-winning automotive journalist Jason Cammisa brings perspective and insight into this review, starting with Volkswagen inventing the hot-hatch segment with the original Mk1 GTI, Lancia inventing the super-hatch segment with the homologation-special Delta Integrale.

SCCA Hall of Fame race-car driver co-stars in this full-length review, setting a new record lap time at the Streets of Willow racetrack in Southern California, even though he's still coughing after a battle with COVID-19.

In fact, it's the Coronavirus that sets the stage here — the global pandemic was a reminder that life is too short to take anything seriously, including drifts, sliding, understeer, and Toyota's GR-4 All-Wheel Drive system.

In the process, Jason falls through a bush, a Lancia Delta blows flames out of its exhaust, we drag race a GR Corolla Morizo versus a GR Yaris, we race them around a track, listen to Typhoid Randy coughing, Randy sets new FWD and hot-hatch lap records, the Corolla calls 9-1-1 on us 9 times, we learn who Mr. Morizo is, and Jason realizes, thanks to Adam Sandler, that he's actually a nobody.

Whoever the editor is... Give that man a raise
  • The Lancia scene at the beginning was a masterclass in editing, not to mention the timing with the exhaust flames and FPV shot
  • Anyone who has ever been a videographer, worked on production, or been apart of a production company knows how insane a project like this, at this caliber is to pull off. From the story boarding, coordinating the cars, cinematography and editing. This is about as good as it gets. And yea, they do all that weekly… this is next level by every standard!

This video wasn't just a performance comparison of these new vehicles, it was an ode to life, success, determination, and a thank you to Toyota, specifically Akio Toyoda himself. I also believe this marks the end of an era because as he steps down from his role, whoever Akio is being replaced by, will be meeting the demands of the industry that made Akio himself could not appease anymore. For us enthusiasts, Akio was the industry leader we needed, but for society, he's seen as a barrier, sadly. It's a bittersweet journey, perhaps, maybe, the end of a chapter (for now).

This is such a fantastic video -- and a seriously beautiful one. Almost makes me re-think two t-shirts and an iPhone.

Jason and this show is honestly the best thing ever. Hagerty you’ve got a gem here, never stop making these with Jason.

This is what Top Gear should have been like. Every moment, on the edge of the seat and completely immersed. Hats off to the writers and the entire production team.

Man, what you are doing is untouchable at the moment. You’re getting everything together. Science, knowledge, editing, production, fun, character, charm. Aiming high 🔥

Back in the days, content like this was only available on cable at a premium, Hagerty is delivering the goods as usual, keep it up lads!
  • One of the most incredibly shot, well presented and entertaining episodes I have watched in recent times. Fantastic work Hagerty, thank you.

Jason you are the man. It is quite refreshing to see an American automotive journalist who is better than their British counterparts. Excellent job buddy!

WOW! In the UK in the early 90s,I owned a lancia delta hf turbo Martini ,it had loads of work done on the engine, we had to strap it down when it was put on the rolling road! It made 194 bhp which these days doesn't sound a lot, but believe me, it was an absolute weapon I've always had fast car's, but the delta is the one that stands out! So I can imagine how good the integrale is, I always wanted one, but now the prices are outrageous!
  • For the sake of clarity, the GR Yaris WRC didn't happen because the WRC implemented testing restrictions amid COVID-19. By the time the GR Yaris homologation special would've been allowed to test, Toyota had run out of time to properly develop it for the 2021 season, which would've been its only competitive season anyway as the Rally1 regs were set to come in a year later. From DirtFish: "Its first test was in February 2020 but by April the FIA had imposed a ban on testing due to the effects of the pandemic being realized globally. Toyota attempts to grant itself an exception as it wasn’t seeking to test its current car but its 2021 car. However the FIA stands firm and says no." These days, the teams build spaceframe chassis that they then turn into stuff that looks like the road cars, so not only is this the first proper homologation special story we've seen from the WRC in years, but it's likely to be the last one we see for a while.

I never get tired of seeing Jason and Randy together. They were fire back in the MT days! So glad they have a new home!
  • @sportsStars77
I dearly missed these VS. The editing is top tier and your narration, makes me want to listen to you in slow mo. Hats off!
  • @gravel_trap
I love the way these videos are choreographed. Jason and Randy are amazing!!
  • @LOGEZZZZZBRO
I didn’t think Hagerty videos, especially Jason and crew’s, couldn’t get any better, yet this is exponentially more amazing than anything this channel has put out before.
  • @embeackts
Watched the whole thing without skipping any frames — its like a film rather than a vlog. Beautiful storytelling, insane cinematography & perfect editing. There’s only one very minor details at 17:00 that I found typo on GR Corolla’s lap time. Cheers! Please continue making this legendary stuff!

What a superb story-telling. This is what quality content looks like. It entertains me while it educates me about the history and how it relates to today's hot-hatch icon. Keep up the good work!

I don't even know how to start this but let me be grateful for the hardwork and passion everyone involved in this project have. I've been a racing fan and car enthusiast since I was a child in the early 90's watching Senna on his F1 on sundays, and since then, even though I kept track of cars and motorsports, only after finding this channel I can say that I had this smile on my face watching this content, that same smile that I had when I was a child, with pure awe, the same one that only real passion can evoke, and for that I thank you, every single one of you that made this possible.
