The ultimate review of the 2023 Nissan Z, including a track battle with the Toyota GR Supra and SCCA Hall-of-Fame race car driver Randy Pobst!

In this episode of ICONS, Webby award-winning journalist Jason Cammisa shines perspective on the New Z, comparing it to the original Datsun 240Z, and then taking us on a journey from the traditional sports-car to today's car of choice: the SUV.

With a Supra vs Z lap battle — complete with Streets of Willow lap times set by Randy Pobst — an impromptu drift-off, this is everything you need to know about the new Z.

Including why the original Z was such a big deal — changing what the term "sports car" meant, when it replaced the typically British two-seat roadster.

Bob Ross blames wage stagnation for sports cars becoming bigger, heavier, and more practical. As we move through the decades, the hottest cars then went to Hot Hatches and then Hot Sedans before now landing on fast SUVs.

The Mazda Miata is the only "British roadster" left. And it's brilliant.
The Hyundai Veloster N is the best hot-hatch money can buy.
The Subaru WRX is the hot sedan for everyman with baby.
The Jaguar F-Pace SVR is The Fun One — an SUV that does what SUVs should never do. Including sound like a NASCAR.

And the Z and Supra? They have just enough practicality to be usable daily drivers, but remind us that looking good is never going out of style.

This is what the 'Old' Top Gear fans loved; humor, knowledge, tact, horsepower. Camissa is a kid at heart and so many of us can relate to him!
  • You could put out a video on the performance of difference types of grass with these guys and i'd watch 100% of the video.
  • This is the BEST piece of automotive journalism ever. Filming, Editing, and Content. Camissa, Randy, and Derek have succeeded the Top Gear legends at last. And Jason doesn't push a US-centric bias as much as Jeremy Clarkson pushed a Eurocentric one throughout his career. I'm liking this new era absurd, catchy, funny, yet accurate and thoughtful.
  • Whoever put all the little notes in the closed captions deserves an oscar, honestly my favorite part
  • @dack981
I appreciate that Jason and his team didn't neglect to talk about the financial reality that drives people away from owning these cars.
  • @JimmyMak
So glad that Hagerty gave Jason what he needed to make his series work. Motortrend was limiting and you can see that, he's having fun here and making amazing content that's accessible by anyone. Thank you!
  • @atrgames
This production is on another level. Jason a Randy make an amazing duo. Props to all involved
  • @chrismuldutch
The old top gear guys used to come up with a video like this every now and then but you guys smash it every single time. Respect.
  • @mightycarmods
Dayum - what a video. Well done to everyone on screen (and off screen) that made this happen. The graphics, music choice, editing. Bravo!
  • @CarsGarage
Standing Ovation, Roaring Growth - the man who's doing subtitles is a funny dude!
  • @ctmusic1
Amazing production, writing, presentation and just keeps getting better. These Hagerty videos are as good or better than any short films deserving of an Emmy. Keep up the good work!
  • Jason, you have done an incredible job of capturing the essence of what MotorTrend used to be, with a little bit of old school Top Gear. Incredible cinematography, poignant writing, beautiful cars, and a nice helping of comedic relief. I get chills every time I watch one of your videos. Bravo.

This film made me go through so many emotions. This wasn't a car review. This was a tribute to what we lost and what we want in our souls. I absolutely loved this!!!. I want more Jason and Randy and films like this!
  • @CBMedia404

  • @geoffre5
I just subscribed because 1) You absolute earned it 2) this makes me extremely excited for your content 3) you didn't ask me to. I'm going to spend the rest of my day watching every Hagerty video with these two.
  • @ImProbsLost

  • @mikefaulhaber
Many of us compare ICONS to the best of Top Gear, but really, ICONS and Jason's other creations for Hagerty are quickly surpassing even that comparison.
  • @edcunhaph
This HAS TO BE the best car video I've seen this year! Excellent camera work, action with the cars and journalism. BTW, The subtitles.... Give that guy a raise! 🤣
  • @kousinkoolaid
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. These episodes are the best bit of automotive entertainment in America. The production is stellar. The audio is amazing. The video and shots are all on point. Don’t get me started on the slo mo walking/ drag race finish scenes. 🤯 I hope the shows continue. Jason has been an amazing auto journalist for a long time and I love seeing the success of the show. I don’t know about that Pobst guy. He seems a little squirrelly. 😂
