I grew up with Harry Potter as many people did, as did many people. I also played many Harry Potter games, so many in fact that I thought that it might be interesting to take a look at the history of Harry Potter games... at least the mainline games. As it turns out, as I was playing through the series, i noticed a pattern of the series becoming gradually worse and worse. So let's take a somewhat comprehensive look at the entire history of Harry Potter games. And take a look at why Harry Potter Games Used To Be Great... Until They Weren't.

Before you scroll down to the comments to let me know that the 6th generation version of Philosopher's Stone came out after the 6th generation version of Chamber Of Secrets, I've already been told that about two hundred times.
  • I've always believed the first Harry Potter games were based on the books not the movies, which is why you see gnomes that never show up in the movies.
  • I remember how these games never really stuck to a genre. We had platformers, action adventure, a couple of RPGs and even what can only be described as a third person shooter/Gears Of War clone
  • The music of the first three games is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard and since little has been with me, it’s just a very nostalgic and cozy feeling
  • The first 3 PC versions were my favorite as a kid and I'll never forget them. I remember playing Goblet of Fire and being disapointed because of how boring it was. Then after that I went back and played the old games and never played the new ones.
  • In the older games they focused on making them FUN, but they also added little details from the book, which is really fun, in the movies Cho Chang is never mentioned ever until Goblet of Fire. But her name is already dropped in the Chamber of Secrets game! Gotta love those small things. I also have to point out that the reason they "made odd choices" and "removed" things that Philosophers stone next gen had, is because it was released after Chamber of Secrets, so it actually improved on it
  • Chamber of Secrets on the ps2 was straight up one of my favorite games as a child. That Jeremy Soule soundtrack is so good.
  • I’d recommend trying the Lego Harry Potter games while not as mechanically deep as the first 3 games it has a fully explorable Hogwarts castle and it’s has platforming and puzzle solving
  • @Nerzko
The PC versions of sorcerer's stone and chamber of secrets are way better than the consoles ones imo, or is it just my memories ? I don't know, don't think so x) I have great memories of these games ! I loved them as a kid

I remember playing the Prisoner of Azkaban on my PS2 when I was a kid. The game was very charming and unique to me. Exploring the castle for the secret cards and pages always felt great. And the soundtrack by Jeremy Soule really set a great tone. I will always appreciate it.
  • Chamber of secrets on the PS2 let you land your broom literally anywhere and you could run around the whole grounds without being teleported
  • Using the Sonic plushie as a face for a photo made me laugh way harder than it needed to
  • I used to play the pc version of Harry Potter 1, 2 and 3 a couple of years ago. They were pretty good back then.
  • Interestingly enough, the next gen verdin of the chamber of secrets was developed before the philosopher’s stone version. I think the fan feedback forced them to make those chances and makes Hogwarts overall more of an open world type.
  • The PC version of Sorcerer's Stone has been a staple of my collection since I was a kid. Absolutely love that version of the game and replay it every so often. Prisoner of Azkaban was another that I thoroughly enjoyed as a kid and really need to replay at some point. Didn't play anything past that though.
  • My favorite part about the Harry Potter games is that you pretty much had different games on every single console. Ps1 PC and GBA were all VASTLY different games imo
  • @AC1RE
Chamber of secrets for the GBA is probably hands down my fav Harry Potter game
  • how come you didn’t cover the pc version of the first two games. It woulda been interesting to have heard your opinion on it. Like they literally had 3 versions for 1 game - the ps 1, ps 2, pc.
  • From what I've seen Hogwarts Legacy seems to be bringing back the QTE sequences everytime you first acquire a spell there and I believe that's an intentional homage to these early HP games which is pretty neat
