Like Sam Raimi's third film, Treyarch's Spider-Man 3 tie-in game struggled to live up to expectations. It was an ambitious title, featuring a bigger open world and more more cinematic combat, but failed to capture the magic of the prior two games. In this video, we'll walk through the game together and analyze what it did right and wrong, while also comparing it to Sam Raimi's movie, and Vicarious Visions PS2 version of the game.

Always Nerdy is a Youtube channel dedicated to all things nerdy, with a focus on comic book game retrospectives for both DC and Marvel. I'm always open to suggestions for games you'd like to see covered, and I hope to eventually cover them all.

"What would Spider-Man be without his spider powers? He'd be... man. Is that what you came here to play, Man 3? I don't think so, so go ahead and crawl up this wall. Y'know, like Spider-Man."

The most intersting part of reading the original Black Suit Saga is realizing how much of what it's known for came from later adaptations/continuity. It's not even really a saga about the suit, it's just a period of comics where Peter happens to have a new suit. In terms of story that's specifically related to the symbiote, it's just "Peter finds symbiote. It occasionally makes him fight crime while sleeping. Reed tells Peter it's alive. Peter gets rid of the suit. End."

These retrospectives became my comfort videos once I've found them
  • The soundtrack for this game is so memorable. The guitar solo in one of the symbiote tracks randomly pops into my head at least once a month lol.

that fucking scream scorpion makes after stillwell calls him a freak might actually be the funniest line delivery i've ever heard in a video game, like it sounds like someone doing an on the spot impression of that one gotg 3 scene with rocket and it kinda even trumps the beginning qte in terms of unintentional comedy for me tbh.

The joke "Is that what you came here to play? Man 3? I don't think so.-" is not talked about enough. 🔥
  • Fun fact: The mad bomber was also in the mtv spider man series, however he's under a different name. I wonder why they chose him instead of another character.

One big positive about the game was how diverse the gameplay was. It never felt repetitive. The game was constantly throwing new things at you to do. Taking pictures for the bugle, defusing bombs, sewer missions, subway missions, mj thrill rides, throwing lizard into generators, fighting a helicopter, and riding on the bombers minions

I was not ready for that "Man 3" joke. This game was way ahead of it's time

1:35:48 Actually Spidey does fight him in the Game Boy Advance version of Spider-Man 3 where he's working with Kingpin who hired him to kidnap a district attorney.

Hey, I would love if you could touch upon at some point later in your retrospective series the connection Web of Shadows has and the potential of it serving as another entry as part of the ‘Raimi-Verse’. Notably the connections such as: - The shared history between Spider-Man and that of Kingpin, Black Cat, Vulture all hinting/referencing their appearances in prior Raimi-games. - The Mech Minibosses having prototypes in Spider-Man 3 (X360/PS3 version) during a photo mission, sharing an identical design. - The line during the first Black Cat mission, “Green Goblin was so 6 years ago! The kids, they like the Venom and the Sandman!”, referencing the timeline between games with WOS releasing in 2008. Peter is also shocked and possibly fearful to see one of Kingpin’s men using similar tech as Goblin, saying, “It can’t be!” worried almost as if Norman or Harry had returned from the dead. - Spider-Man 3 essentially being used as a jumping off point mechanically for the gameplay of WOS. - Peter’s voice (that’s a joke, and I love it actually). I’d love to see your thoughts on this, especially since ‘Friend or Foe’ is often discussed as being a final entry in these line of games when I’ve always personally believed WOS should be considered as such if not more so. Loving the series thus far!

You finally finished the Rami tie in games, can’t wait to see what’s next for your retrospective

Absolutely loving the new format! Having interviews spread throughout the video is an awesome idea and getting anything behind the scenes is wonderful
