To explain the journalist’s ‘allergy’, your immune cells have randomly generated protein markers on them from when they were created and ‘tested’ by your body(this is so your immune cells can identify diseases), in other words, there’s a chance your immune system has randomly generated data that matches a disease humanity has not encountered yet, so basically, the journalist hit the biological jackpot to have immunity to bugsnax, problem is that their immune system calls for immediate expulsion of any consumed bugsnax, to which they’ll be flying for the toilet just so they can follow through with the immune reaction

Honestly, I'm not sure if the player is allergic to all bugsnax. As far as we know, they only tried a Strabby. By all means, the player could only be allergic to Strabbies! Then again, it's like saying a person with a nut allergy can still have almonds even though they were terribly allergic to peanuts.

i headcanon that the journalist knows something is up with the bugsnax, and you know how you get nauseous when you're scared or super nervous? it's kind of like that. they're not actually allergic, they just arent sure what else it could have been.

I'm thinking that the reason the journalist is allergic to bugsnax is because their allergic to bug types (when consumed) and bugsnax are half bug type.

I'm sure that they didn't want to implement eating bugsnax yourself because it might players think you get some kind of power, but it's quite obvious (or just convenient for them) that they didn't want to have to animate the player's snakified body.
