In defense of Shelda (spoilers), she's actually one of the most interesting characters. Unlike GOOP, she's not actually evil, she just doesn't know how to communicate herself without making a caricature of herself. Her wisdom actually is pretty good, not only about the island, but in the Bigsnax DLC she outright says she isn't a replacement for therapy, and tells one of the characters that their loved one needs professional help. You're supposed to dislike her initially, because she really is a fraud, and a bit of a hypocrite, she feels the need to be one in order to be heard. Which she comes to terms with, noting that she will be heard by whoever listens.
  • It takes guts to turn your most marketable character into the villain. Especially if they never see it coming.
  • gramble shouting “that’s why your wife left you!!!” is probably my favourite part of the entire game. catching bugsnax was cool, doing side quests was fun, but i could listen to gramble tell wambus he makes his wife feel unloved and uncared for over and over. it’s hilarious

Something interesting about the sidequests to me is that none of the characters ever actually achieve their goals. Wambus never manages to farm Bugsnax, Gramble can't make a family out of what are essentially wild animals, Beffica can't find any dirt on Chandlo (and all of her quests to get dirt on the other characters only serve to make her more and more miserable), Wiggle can't get the inspiration she wants, Triffany doesn't find out what happened to her grandmother, none of Cromdo's schemes pan out, Chandlo will never be the strongest thing out there, Snorpy's obsession with his secrets only pushes Chandlo away, Floofty's disregard for everyone around them pushes everyone away and their experiments bear no real fruit in the end, and Shelda's unable to practice what she preaches and the front she puts on only makes her message more confusing. None of these characters get what they want, and it's through these failures that they realize that Bugsnax are not the answer to their problems, thus allowing them to fight the Bugsnax off in the golden ending. Because Bugsnax aren't an answer, for all that they prey on insecurities and weaknesses. The only characters who don't have sidequests are Filbo, who despite his confidence issues only ever asks for Bugsnax when he's straight up starving; Eggabell, though that's more because technically her quests are part of the main quest; the videos show that she did turn to Bugsnax due to her issues; and Lizbert, who's already witnessed the Horrors by the time the player gets to her. And I think that's why the journalist is allergic to Bugsnax; they don't have any substantial issues for the Bugsnax to latch onto. Notice how Bugsnax only ever seem to be hostile (charging, launching fireballs) towards the player? And I think there's something so important in that; no matter how hard these characters try, they won't achieve their goals if they try to rely on something as insubstantial (and insidious) as Bugsnax. And the fact that failing so many times and thus realizing that the Bugsnax won't actually help them is what makes them invulnerable in the final levels,,, i'm not crying you're crying
  • The spoiler section looks like the inside of that giant meatball at the end of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

i did like how the isle of bigsnax update fleshed shelda out a bit more. it gave a few more characters development and screen time that was all fantastic, but it did a great job showing shelda as less of a grumpy hypocrite and more someone lost in her ways looking for answers imo

Fun fact: you can use the buggy ball as a second anchor point for your tripwire in areas where there may be none. You even get an achievement for it
  • @MagicalMaster
If you want to learn to like Shelda, get her to break character. She becomes down to earth and completely relatable.

This video has covered the game very well, I'd say. When I went through the game, I had those same revelations and experiences. I absolutely love how the grumpuses were written and I would honestly like to see more of that in games. I know games can be an escape from problems, but sometimes it is the reminder that we're not alone while struggling that makes things easier. I really do hope they do a Bugsnax 2 or something to continue the story of these characters, but even without this is a really satisfying game. I'm so glad that it essentially came out of left-field and was really fresh. I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much with an idea of what it was before going in. Thanks for the video! The editing is very enjoyable (and I appreciate the extra Scoopy Banoopy at the end).
