The political feud between Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Disney has been heating up for the last few months. In April 2023, Disney filed a First Amendment lawsuit against DeSantis, accusing the governor of waging a ‘targeted campaign of government retaliation.” DeSantis, who’s preparing for a 2024 presidential campaign on the GOP ticket, says he isn’t backing down. So how did this all begin? And who will come out on top, once it’s all done?

Other big companies are watching. Make no mistake.

Look I’m no attorney myself but I’m fairly certain that Disney’s legal department is something to fear even among Fortune 500 companies
  • @augustortiz
Disney doesn’t sue unless they have a clear cut case. As the top comment here said: Disneys legal team is a force to be reckoned with even amongst the Fortune 500.

Disney can claim unequal treatment before the law since De Santis isn't dealing with the other Special Economic Districts in Florida.
  • man I used to live in Orlando. I ain't no big fan of massive Disney Corporation, but back in the day central FLA was just a breeding ground for palmetto bugs and mosquitoes. Then Walt and his boys came along and set up shop. Say what you want about Disney, but without them, do you know what central FLA would be? Just a breeding ground for palmetto bugs and mosquitoes. People don't come here for the mini-golf, they can get that in South Carolina. If Walt and his boys were to up stakes and leave, do you know what central FLA would be? Just a breeding ground for mosquitoes and palmetto bugs. Don't be an idiot Ron. Don't shoot the horse that brung us here.

DISNEY DOESN'T HAVE THE FREEDOM TO TELL THE CITIZENS OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA WHAT TO THINK
  • @cameron00148
DeSantis thinks that going up against Disney will make him appear to be "tough" and "Cool", not realizing that he's about to get JUMPED by Disney and their legal team. Also, for those who don't know, Florida's economy is largely dependent on Tourism, with Walt Disney World being one of the most popular tourist destinations in Florida! Also, Florida is still recovering from Hurricane - Fiona/Ian/Nicole and so if I were the governor of Florida? Antagonizing Disney would certainly NOT be on my "1001 things to do" list.
  • "Such an odd decision from the supposedly pro-business party, especially considering Disney is Central Florida’s largest private employer. Not only that but Disney’s also the reason anyone goes to Florida other than spring break and to die.” ~ Stephen Colbert

Great point by Iger. The same people who pretend to complain about the special district don't complain about The Villages and the Daytona speedway.
  • Wow! This is just like Cities Skylines! Having the power to build a prison next to the locale's largest tourism district is so city simulation!

If I was a comedy writer right now I'd have an episode where Rand Paul comes out on Desantis' side calling for more government overreach, and have Elizabeth Warren comes out in defense of the giant international corporation being able to make profit without government interference.

Disney is developing the DeSantis ride,it goes no place.
  • @bmiller949
DeSantis is term limited, Disney is not.
  • @houchi69
Fight! Fight! Fight! Shoving popcorn in my face Disney will come out on top, because they have the money, period. Disney is single handedly fueling Florida's economy and literally paying Ron DeSantis' salary.

CEOs need to keep out of politics... the entire board of Disney should be fired. Its not their place to get mixed up politics.
  • I'd love to see Disney announce they bought property in another state and are picking up and moving.

I live in Anaheim and have several friends who are employed by the Mouse. There is one big reason - DeSantis did not like the fact that Disney paid way more in taxes to CA than they did to FL. He put himself in a position of no escape. He wants to run for President. Gonna be hard if the forward-facing impression is one of letting a corporation dictate to you what to do. Once he started, he couldn't back down. He didn't shoot himself in the foot. He blew his leg off. He has no choice but to see it through. But, his party gave him an out. They have not advanced the FL bill that would allow him to remain Governor while running for President. If they don't, he'll have to give up on one or the other. He's finding out, the only people happy with his feud are his die hard supporters in FL. Yes, Disney gets special attention in CA too. Why? Because they also bring in a boat load of outside income. Even though the price of admission keeps going up, the place is always packed. Most of the people here don't go. Just like most people living in Las Vegas rarely go to a casino. Tourism is a steady, non-stop income stream. Disney built a road in under a year here that the county couldn't get finished in two. They have the best lawyers on the planet. Literally.

"House of mouse taking legal action against the governor". That's gold.
  • @po2709
Disney was in Florida long before DeSantis and will be there long after he's gone.
