I wanted more work space for my garage shop, so I built a DIY workbench based on a design from Matthias Wandel.

I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great youtube.com/post/UgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWx… Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

Many useful tidbits and simply Smart and never stupid ! Thank you ,sir !
  • I've been looking at a bunch of workbench videos. This is the first time someone showed the basic design BEFORE starting detailed construction. It is so helpful to understand where you are going... I wish every video was done this way. Thank you!!

What ur doing is simply and clear. Now i have to try it and I think, ur bench work is on the way to travel to France. Thanks for ur nice job.

This is exactly what I needed for my workbench project! Thank you. New sub!
  • Typically, when you are building a long workbench like this that is going to fill the entire wall, you attach it to the wall and thus are using the wall for structural support / stability. When you do that, it's not important that the workbench is square, just that it has a consistent depth from the back wall and is level. Of course, buildings settle over the years, so what might be perfectly level now might not be in 30 years. Depending upon what you are trying to do, sometimes it is more important that your work surface is perfectly flat and sometimes perfectly level. For anyone building this sort of workbench though, it more a case of just "reasonably" flat / level since you are just working with framing grade 2x4s. If the workbench is attached to the wall, you eliminate a lot of the concern for adding lateral stability to your design -- you're 2x4 legs just need to support a strictly compressive load, so notching them for a lap joint does not weaken the design from a lateral standpoint. Using those wood screws to attach the legs is weak point in the design since the entire weight of the table is going to be depending on the shear strength of those screws.
  • Good job young man... You have built it your way, ignore the naysayers. Thanks for sharing this. :-)
  • I've never seen a perfectly flat and level floor or wall so a little off square is no issue, if you were to build a perfectly square and level desk it would not be level once in place, so just adapting the design on the fly for that specific surface is your best bet, good video and well presented.

looks like great table , and very smart way to do , like my saying keep it simple lol

Do you have a favorite simple bench design? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for watching, and take care!

Hi how deep did you make your benches thanks for the video
  • @zachkunkle6309
Half lap joints do not weaken the structural integrity once assembled. Relying on screws for load bearing is a bad idea.
  • @fredcharles2602
Should have put your angle braces under top, that way you could leave them till you were done.
  • @cavemanjoe7972
Dowels for the end frames, but long top braces screwed on, and then screws in the end grain on horizontal braces that aren't level, plus the lag bolts as levels on the legs. You made things a lot harder on yourself than they needed to be, but anything you learn the hard way you never forget, so it works out. Plus the bench is still a bench.👍

What's the name of the software you use in the beginning of the video to design your workbench?
