The rhythmic beats and vivid colors of the Sandonta festival in Khukhan District, Sisaket, soon call out to us. Amidst the festivity, the deep-rooted respect for the past becomes evident, as we join the family in a touching prayer at their home, honoring their ancestors. As the clock ticks closer to midnight, the entire village gathers at the local temple. Under the serene night sky, offerings of food and drinks are meticulously prepared and presented in a unique, time-honored ritual, strengthening the bond between the living and the ancestral spirits, and between Buddha and his followers.
But the adventure doesn't end there! Between the laughter and dances, we take to the winding roads of Sisaket on a motorbike. Children with their infectious enthusiasm fish by the water, and the lush greenery beckons us deeper. Here, in the very heart of the forest, we encounter a local showcasing the art of cooking snails, a true testament to the bounties and beauty of nature that Isaan generously offers.
