Thailand is a popular destination for expats due to its low cost of living, beautiful tropical climate, and friendly locals. There are many opportunities for work in industries such as teaching, tourism, and hospitality. Here are some things expats should know:

1. Visa requirements: Expats will need to obtain the correct visa in order to work and reside in Thailand. This can be done through a work permit, investor visa, or retirement visa. It is important to research which type of visa is the most appropriate for your situation.

2. Cost of living: Thailand is relatively cheap compared to Western countries, but prices of commodities vary in different parts of the country. The cost of living also depends on the type of lifestyle you choose, such as whether you opt for western-style housing or the conventional Thai lifestyle.

3. Language: Thai is the official language of Thailand, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. However, learning some basic Thai can go a long way in terms of communicating and making friends with locals.

4. Culture and customs: Thailand is a deeply traditional and friendly country, with many customs and traditions that are worth learning. Thais place a high value on politeness, hospitality, and a focus on "sanuk," or having fun.

5. Health care: Thailand has a good healthcare system, with many private and public hospitals available. Expats should invest in healthcare insurance to avoid any unforeseen medical emergencies.

6. Transportation: Getting around Thailand is relatively easy with many modes of transportation available, including taxis, buses, and tuk-tuks. Bangkok also has a metro system that makes getting around the city easier. However, traffic in major urban areas can be a problem.

7. Food: Thai food is famous for its delicious and flavorful dishes, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients and spices. Eating in Thailand is affordable, with many street food vendors as well as upscale restaurants available.

8. Safety: Thailand is a relatively safe country with low rates of violent crime. However, expats should be aware of petty theft and scams, especially in touristy areas.

Overall, Thailand is a great place for expats to live and work, but it is important to do thorough research and preparation before making the move.

Home internet for example 3BB is 500 baht a month. You can use it for TV as well as your computer and cell phone.
  • I think Switzerland is a nightmare with regulations and legislation and cost. I remember at 40 years old my health insurance was chf 280 = 10,360 baht per month in Switzerland for the minimum policy and was compulsory (i.e. forced to pay it). The Swiss tax and government state pension was more than I was paying in the UK on less income.

You don't need any permit for solar panel installation. But you can not sell the power back to the power company yet.

For Thais, the hospital is free and a minimal charge for foreigners. There are several tiers for private hospitals. Some are very expensive.
