EDIT: I am aware this came out before the advent of the Atom bomb. Much of those comments were exaggerated for humor sake an for reference to some world building. It was my first scripted video, I just didn't convey it very well. I hope to do better with that in the future.

This may be the nicest this old badger will ever be.

I Have been wanting to do this for a long time, and after much slow paced work and man many rewrites and redrawing I present my first review.

  • This cartoon is practically ''the'' time capsule to the impending war. Germany declared war on September 1, 1939...this was aired December 7th of the same year. All about peace and the effects of war, well, to think the amount of damage that would follow the next 5 years and 7 months is quite shocking. It's almost frightening.
  • You have to admit, the animation during the parts with the soldiers was fucking epic.
  • The thing I like about this cartoon is how the cutesy scenes are counterbalanced with the darker scenes. A human is shown as something sinister wearing a gasmask and helmet, making the character ironically less human. There is tragedy in the humans killing off each other but it is like it is a mindless killing with the last two shooting each other. There is also a religious overtone to the cartoon namely how the animals gather around a church as an old owl reads the Bible, pointing out where the humans went wrong. The scene hints that God is giving the planet over to the animals and from the wastes they build their own society.
  • For 1939 this was edgy but it does make sense as WW2 broke out months before
  • I remember watching this as a kid on Boomerang and being struck by it
  • But it was in the 30s before nuclear bombs was dropped it was most likely talking about ww1 where mankind killed each other off though shear attrition of each other
  • Not many may remember it because there was remake with entirely new animation titled "Good Will To Men" in 1955
  • I have this on a mix VHS tape from 1990. It still plays, all six hours. It was part of the Tom and Jerry Christmas Special.
  • I really enjoy watching this every Christmas since I was little, it's a big shame World War 2 shortly started around the time it was created.
  • Grandpa: Yes and they told me back in 17 the Great War would've ended in two days....instead they threw us into a meat grinder. I can still the anger I felt towards that rat Nivelle searing. Kid: But Grandpa what about Men? Grandpa: Oh don't worry kids you'll forget all about men....just like they forgot about me in that trench at Verdun for 18 agonizing months every night I wake up screaming.
  • whiched this when I was a little kid.in the early 70"s I new it was a caughstionary tail.
  • The main question is. Why have the squirrels two tails ?
  • Looks like the Internet Archive copy got taken down, a real shame. The short did get remade in the 1950's taking into account Atomic Warfare, but there's a certain detachment at the end with mushroom clouds obliterating cities, this original 1939 classic is honestly far more impactful..."A Single death is a Tragedy, a Million is a Statistic" I suppose...
  • Grandpa: I was at Hue, Charlie was every where, and that was when Johnny....Johnny...Johnny...JOHNNY!!!!!!
  • I think the elderly squirrel predicted the battle between That Vegan Teacher and normal viewers.
  • As do i. i had the vhs, and watched it EVERY Christmas
