Hi! The oldest mummy made by man is currently a S American one at 5050 bc ish. Ötzi is a little over 3000 bc ish with the oldest naturally made mummy being around 7000bc ish from the Atacama. Ötzi is probably the oldest mummy with tattoos (so far!) These are lines and dots which seem to coincide with areas of arthritis or other diseases, so possibly pain relief or "magic". The oldest picture tattoos on mummies are from Egypt, around the same time as Ötzi, and feature a bull and a ram on a bloke, with what's been interpreted as "dancing clubs" tattooed on a female. Cool.

Ötzi wasn’t on the paleo diet. He was on the chalcolithic diet.

Otzi also had Lyme disease and an arrow head still stuck in his shoulder and cut on his hand probably caused by hand to hand combat prior to the sneak attack that killed him. Tough little guy.
  • The calcification is caused by eating minerals in the wrong proportions. Cholesterol is actually 100% meaningless, and it is solely the calcifications that drive heart disease. Important to remember that calcified tissue is depolarized - this is why heart attacks happen. PS, if you eat fortified foods a lot, your heart looks as bad as his, or will when you reach his age. The more calcium you consume relative to magnesium, the more your soft tissue - not just your heart but every other organ, muscle, tendon, and ligament - will calcify.

I really like the teleportation entrance in this video
  • Cool video and old news. I went to Pompei once and was blown away by the archaeology. I've seen some very good documentaries on Otzi. Paqariq tampu sounds like an song by Barry Manilow. Lol

You ever going to bring the Old News series back?

They recovered the Pompeii guy's skull intact. So the rock probably didn't kill him. It trapped him.

0:51 It really looks like the ash fell before he died and he was hit by the rock in the face and that matches historical accounts and how most explosive eruptions happen. I wonder if he was even looking up at the mountain. People who died in the pyroclastic flow were burning up and suffering immensely, their bodies are usually in fetal position like those shown at 1:28
  • From studies I've read, Otzi also had parasitic worms, and tattoo marks at known acupuncture points. He also had medicinal mushrooms with him as I recall. So no he wasn't in the best health but he was also being treated using medical knowledge of the day.
  • I never liked the evolution argument for what to eat. Even if they knew what all those ancient people ate it wouldn't have been particularly convincing as an argument. But it is clear that carbohydrates are the primary villain for poor metabolic health, not fats. We have billions of living humans to get that data from.
