Vice City and Resident Evil CENSORED?! - Glasses Off

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition (catchy name) is in the spotlight due to some alterations made to Vice City that some find perplexing. Resident Evil 4 VR is also in a similar situation. Are these just capitulations to the "woke mob" (whatever that means) or is there something far less interesting at play? Should important pieces of art be edited to evolve with the times? It's been a while since I've done a Glasses Off and I have some thoughts.

MESSAGE TO AUDIENCE ►
Thanks to all of you who are somehow still here. I really do appreciate the support. The fact that so many of you are still here despite my erratic schedule is something I don't take for granted. Been going through a lot of personal stuff during this pandemic. Won't get into specifics cuz a lot of it is personal and I don't like when people overshare, but I'm trying to just get a lot done and make stuff that's worth watching. Sincerely, thank you.

  • I hate that we can't have bad characters do bad things anymore. When RE8 released people pointed out that Heisenberg had a Nazi dog tag or something and complained because they liked him before... He's a fucking villain, he's a bad guy, he helped take an infant child, disect her and tried to convince her father to put her back together and use her like a weapon, he's a bad guy, let him do and have done bad things, it's not like he's presented as a paragon of justice and heroism

Yeah, stuff like this really only happens to video games. I've been watching Seinfeld again recently and that show has a loooooot of stuff that would not be allowed if the show was made today. You don't see them re-shooting the George Costanza gay panic episodes, because that would be entirely ridiculous. I think part of it is that it's much easier to change stuff within a game without it being completely obvious to the layman, whereas trying to re-edit or re-shoot Schindler's List 30 years later would stick out like a sore thumb. Hopefully they'll learn eventually, but what are the chances of that?

Chris: Distancing an obvious far right caricature from the confederate flag doesn't make sense. Twitter: Why do you like Nazis, Chris?

You're 100% right on your point about other forms of art rarely seeing censorship. Feels very disrespectful to games in general. Whether it's something big (Super Hot VR) or something small like flirting removed from RE:4 it's disheartening for a reason that's almost hard to explain.
  • @RukiaFeet
The re4 changes really annoy me. Ashley sticks up for herself when you look up her skirt and when luis comments on her figure. They actually silenced her and ironically made her seem weaker
  • @windwaker105
I don’t want games to be sterilized so big companies don’t feel uncomfortable making money
  • "In the name of making this game appeal to people who don't like the confederacy, we have removed all associations between the confederacy and stupid people. Thank you for your time, GTA 6 never"
  • @outsider344
Something no one mentions about RE4VR is that they make your in game hands invisible if they get close to Ashley. Any other character model or object your hands will just clip through like is standard in VR, but for Ashley they made them vanish, presumably to keep you from being weird with her. So nobody worry, the in game babysitter is here to make sure you don't hear anything sexist or touch anything wrong, everything will be alright...

Remember when rockstar would purposely put shit like this in their game to piss people off? Yeah, causing and promoting controversy around their games was practically their marketing strategy back in the day. Modern rockstar in general just isn't all that great of a corporation
  • @kingbash6466
The reason why we shouldn’t change old works is because they not only act as time capsules of their respective eras, but they also allows us to compare old sensibilities to our modern sensibilities.

Oh god, Ethan GAAAACH wrote the gta trilogy article, the lore grows ever deeper
  • @izzynobre
The point about how they only do these kinds of things to video games is perhaps the best observation I've heard on this entire censorship debacle

While I think Chris is right about Apple being a factor, i think he needs to look deeper into the restructuring of Rockstar. After Red Dead Redemption 2 was released, a lot of key players (those responsible for building Rockstar, writing their scripts, and shaping their overall vision) - were forced out of the company. There has been a lot of internal memos about how the company is going to start being socially conscious and shy away from the “harmful” humor of past games. My point is, the company has hired a lot of woke weirdos (the usually corporate hacks who were hired straight out of university) - who want to radically change the culture at the company. I truly believe we are in for a rude awakening when we see future Rockstar titles completely toned down and stripped of the unapologetic edgy humor that defined them. So apart of me does wonder if this move was also apart of their initiative to clean things up.
  • Everytime Chris takes off his glasses even for a second, I always have a Vietnam flashback to that glasses-less fetish Tumblr page on him and wonder how serious it was.

In the author's afterword for the 1979 edition of "Fahrenheit 451", Ray Bradbury had this interesting experience with "fans": "About two years ago, a letter arrived from a solemn young Vassar lady telling me how much she enjoyed reading my experiment in space mythology, The Martian Chronicles. But, she added, wouldn't it be a good idea, this late in time, to rewrite the book inserting more women's characters and roles? A few years before that, I got a certain amount of mail concerning the same Martian book, complaining that the blacks in the book were Uncle Toms and why didn't I 'do them over'? Along about then came a note from a Southern white suggesting that I was prejudiced in favor of the blacks and that the entire story should be dropped." The afterword then goes into great detail explaining how deeply, deeply stupid these notions were and how he would be damned if he was going to allow anyone to alter his art. He ends it with: "In sum, do not insult me with the beheadings, finger-choppings or the lung-deflations you plan for my works. I need my head to shake or nod, my hand to wave or make into a fist, my lungs to shout or whisper with. I will not go gently onto a shelf, degutted, to become a non-book." Videogame designers and everyone else would be wise to emulate the late, great Ray Bradbury, he knew where all this bullshit would lead.....

"Why does a protagonist have to be an inherently good and perfect person? Why does a villain have to be made more palatable?" This quote right here accurately sums up the issue with woke culture and the entertainment industry.

To me it’s not even censoring problematic content, it’s just removing personality and character-flaws for the sake of being as blandly appealing as possible. It’s only “problematic” if you think satire is problematic or you think character flaws are problematic. Which considering you can find people complaining villains are problematic seems to actually be a thing…
