Exploring Two Oldest 18th Century Stone Huts

‪@VINTERIUM..EXPLORIUM.1‬ These small round mediterranean stone houses with conical roof are typically made from local limestone. The main feature of this old stone hut is a construction technique made of dry stone. Important to say that only stone was used in the construction which makes this structure really unique. Farmers had picked rocks out of soil to clear space to grow olive tries, grapes vines and vegetables,ect. They then used rocks to construct walls around geometric plots, a grid that streched for kilometres and peculiarity are this stone hut called KAŽUN. This 18th century old buildings are known for their unique construction and historical significance representing the traditional architecture and rural heritage of the region ISTRA (CROATIA).   • Instead of (or alongside of) shrubby hedgerows, they also use these rocks to make divisions between plots; they are wonderful to look at because they fill in with plants and ferns - and lizards, some birds and squirrels live in them. Many wild creatures end up inhabiting them. They are everywhere in Istria.
  • The people there say that the huts ("kazuon" in dialect) are built as refuges if the farmer gets caught in a rainstorm.
