In part 18 of the 9-week truck bed camping road trip, I'm fly fishing a tiny creek that is full of big native cutthroat trout...some of which rival those found in the biggest rivers out west...which is super impressive considering this creek is tiny. The last fish of the day was a monster for this class of stream...watch closely to see the other freaks in that pool. Be sure to check out the teaser at the end for part 19/day 2 on this stream without a doubt it's the best small stream or creek I've ever fished. This fishery is amazing...lots of big native westslope cutthroat trout in a beautiful small stream, wilderness setting!

I started my 9 week off-the-grid, road trip on July 31, 2022, and spent roughly 3 weeks in WY, ID and MT returning home mid-October. I'll be sharing one video/week until the series is complete. Check out all the videos from this trip in the playlist linked below:

That is as close to paradise as a fisherman can get. Reminds me of Wyoming in the early 1980’s when I could catch loads of 13-19 inch browns and rainbows in streams even smaller than that one. So blessed to have had that opportunity.

Fishing and walking around in a Bob Ross painting. Nice!

Thank you for showing the public how to properly release fish. We need more sports anglers like you! Capt. Pete

The best trout fishing video I've ever seen. You're good! Beautiful location... No people.. no guides... No hint of civilization!

What an absolutely idyllic setting. I'm so jealous...

Been "lurking" for some time while following your fly-fishing adventure across the inter-mountain west. Yes, there are these little gems to be found and once you find them they are typically a closely guarded secret. As a fellow fly-fisher and resident of MT, I appreciate your effort to keep these gems from becoming overrun and destroyed from receiving too much fishing pressure. Also, your efforts to keep from over stressing the fish after catching them is noteworthy as are your efforts to release them back into the stream. You have gained another subscriber.
  • The late Ed Zern, long ago writer for field & stream magazine, discouraged people from learning to fly fish. His reason was, we can biuld more bowling alleys and golf courses but we can't make more trout streams.

So many big trout in so little water, fishing heaven, watching you in awe and will be dreaming of finding a stream like this, thanks for the video.

That looked like real grizzly country. Been to Wyoming and Yellowstone 5 times in the mid to latter 1980s and tried never to fish alone in the backcountry. And rule #1, make a lot of noise. But the fishing opportunities out there are just fantastic. Dries like pale morning dun, royal coachman and Dave’s hopper worked really well. Back then the crowds disappeared just before Labor Day. So I tried to plan my trips just after the holiday. Funny how cold it could get within a couple of weeks of the crowds leaving. A lot of fond memories. Totally magical place with very agreeable trout.

Here I am "trapped" in northern Minnesota winter......and your post has relaxed me and dropped my blood pressure to the point of making my cardiologist smile.....the places you find are always so peaceful.....some day I'll be a wanderer as well....thanks for sharing.
  • I’ve been fly fishing for 40 years and that’s one of the most beautiful spots I’ve seen. The visibility in that water and those fish. Full package. Looks a lot like some of the spots I’ve fished in my backyard in BC. Thanks for sharing 🙏

Great vid Bro beautiful little creek & some of the biggest cutthroats I’ve ever seen 👌🏼 we don’t have any over here in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 I can’t wait until trout season starts so I can catch my 1st trout on the fly Ive trout fished for nearly 40 years but always bait fishing until 4/5 years ago I got into spinning with Mepps & Rapala lures I did catch 2 tiny wild browns years ago mature 25/30 years on a hobo fly rod I managed to set up 😂 but last year I bought a proper fly rod & reel I got proper waders with good boots as my old all in one neoprene chest waders with wellies attached got a hole in them but they served me well for 5 years but as I’m older and less fitter wearing those with a fishing waist pack (basically a pimped out fanny pack 😂) & a rucksack it was hard going on a full days fishing my new waders are so light & the boots are so much more comfy than those wellies & for Christmas I got a fly fishing vest that has a backpack attached so should make for lighter work & I’ll be able to get around better & longer 😁 excuse the rant but this vid got me excited for the coming season 😉 Take it easy and Tight lines ✌🏼💙🎣👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Drag set great and love to see it used properly. Been fly Tying and fishing all my life. I met Fran betters and lefty before they passed on to the chalk stream in the sky. Great great sport.

I've done this in the eastern sierras, it doesn't happen often, but when it does , it's a dream come true! Great job and video is excellent.👍😎🙏

This brings back memories. Grew up in Cape Breton (NS) and my father and I fished many streams that looked just like this especially up in the highlands. He was a magician with the fly rod, I never had quite that skill but still good enough. Most likely all fly fishers watching this, but if you’re not one, you should give it a try. A fly rod and a stream like this is a fun and beautiful as it looks. Thanks for the upload buddy, cheers from Canada.

Beautiful trout in beautiful country! Best of both worlds! Thanks for your time and effort.
  • @EducatedSkeptic
Awesome stream! I've had similar experience in the Sierra Nevada, the Rockies, and in Alaska ....... IF you're willing to walk a half-hour or more for access to a decent, clean stream, you can catch one heckuva mess of great fish! Too many people just want to stay close to the beer cooler.
