Although I think this movie was well executed I still think it is not as good as the 1953 movie. I hate saying this but even the Williams score is not as good as the score for the original film written by Leith Stevens neither is the screen play as good as that written by Barré Lyndon. I think Byron Haskin's 1953 direction is tighter and more riveting as well. Having Gene Barry and Ann Robinson appear as cameos at the end (the grandparents) was a nice nod to the original film (wherein they played the main characters). If you get to see the HD enhanced version of the 1953 film (which has had the special effects wire rigs digitally painted out) it is a masterpiece in what the effects technicians were able to achieve at the time. Even better in the film we get to see the military attacking the Martians with all their hardware and even a nuclear bomb. The battles in the new film are mainly implied without any actual exposition of the action.
