💡 Protestant's THOUGHTS Touring Pioneer Latter-day Temple

Published 2024-02-04
Over the past 18 months, a series of experiences have activated my curiosity towards the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through the exploration, one of the most enlightening experiences has been to tour Temple Open Houses. For my third Open House, I was given the chance to tour the St. George Utah Temple, a historic pioneer temple that started construction in 1871. It left a lasting impression as I continue to make sense of this nomad's journey, with several new questions surfacing.

In this video, I'll share takeaways from the rededicated St. George Utah Temple. It was a lot to process, so my hope is this video helpfully conveyed my reaction as best as possible.

  • Thanks for following along with this journey. What would you recommend looking at next?
  • @CraigPetty555
To all LDS that read this "i love you all"!! Beautiful people, beautiful temples, and just wonderful people! God bless you!!
  • @glencamblin
I and my team did the woodwork on this temple. I was there for 2 years and the happy smiles were always present while we labored through the project. I didn’t work a single day without reflecting on how dedicated those pioneers were who built the building originally. Many of their ancestor’s worked on this renovation with us. We will keep u in our prayers
  • @jirohpages
David please please listen to Elder Hollands talk "REMEMBER LOT'S WIFE". Please to my fellow lds like this so he'll see this. I feel that that talk would really resonate with him.
  • Lifelong member here, 76 years old. Your openness about your spiritual journey brings tears to my eyes. I applaud your caution. It speaks well of the seriousness you bring to the issue. Your positive experiences with the members are fairly typical, but we are far from perfect. As I look around my current neighborhood in Utah, I'm amazed at the goodness of my neighbors. However, they are not the source of my conviction that the Restoration really happened, they are just one wonderful side effect of it. The more I study the scriptures, especially with the help of faithful scholars who are all over the internet, the more I am astonished at its scope and grandeur. May the Lord continue to lead you in your spiritual journey. Much love.
  • Hello from New Zealand… I love that you are cautious yet curious. Both are good - I was raised in one religion, which I loved, and before I became a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I looked at 12 other religions. I’m glad I did - it helped me on my journey to the restored Church of Jesus Christ. Ask lots of questions. Then pray for direction. I wish you well on your spiritual journey.
  • @TheMightyJor
Hey! I'm a lifelong Latter-day Saint. I've enjoyed following your journey. You are a good man. God bless you!
  • @dcarts5616
David, you have as much if not more faith and belief in God, and in his Son Jesus Christ as we LDS do. You’ve felt the spirit and tasted the fruits as much as any of us. We’ve just decided to park our cars inside the LDS garage as your ancestors did, while you’re currently parked outside in a temporary cover. We love you for doing these videos, I love my fellows Christians who are trying to remain hopeful and faithful in 2024. Come on in, David. There’s plenty of room.
  • @ryan1usu
You’re a modern pioneer. You’re just like Brigham Young. When he first heard of the restoration he was hesitant. Many of his family and friends embraced it quickly. He took his time. I believe he studied and followed the Saints for nearly two years before his conviction was sure and he was baptized. Like the parable of the sower you are wise. You don’t want to rush in only to face a scorching sun or choking weeds. Your ground is so very good. I’ve never seen a Protestant with such a humble heart demonstrate so much care and kindness to the Saints and our story. You love the Lord’s temple. You proceed with caution because you want to ensure your foundation is sure before you build up your spiritual temple. You are wise. You will yet receive revelation and vision the likes of which heretofore you have never before experienced. Thank you for all you do.
  • David, you are doing the Lords work on this channel. I’ve followed you since before any of the LDS episodes and was hoping somehow you’d attend at least one ward. I was excited when you did and was impressed with your fair treatment. I’m sure it’s obvious by now that the LDS community loves you and recognizes the good you continue to do. Any church would benefit from having you in their membership. Any ward in the LDS faith would greatly benefit with you in its membership. For many LDS converts there is a huge lifestyle change. On my mission I literally saw a drunkard living in the gutter in Belfast give up all his sins to Jesus and commit to follow Him, that was a huge change for Billy. You on the other hand are already living the teachings of Jesus Christ and have taught many of us on here a lot of great lessons. In a world of darkness, you are a shining light. Lots wife did look back because she wasn’t ready to completely leave her old life behind. On the other hand, if you listen closely to the sacrament prayer next time you attend “ your ward” you’ll notice the word “ remember” is used. So yes, we are encouraged to look back to our savior Jesus Christ and remember Him. I believe that your foundation is much like the St George temple, it’s obviously been shored up and built very well. I love the advice that we get from the apostle Paul. 1 Theselonians 5:21 Prove all things, hold fast that which is good. Keep up the good work, we all wish the best for you and already looking forward to your next episode.

The Salt Lake Temple open house in 2025-2026 is going to blow us all away. I can’t wait. David, don’t miss that one!
  • @daveadams8005
After my dad passed, my aunt was struggling mightily. She was missing my dad and dealing with her own husband dying of cancer. Cardinals are relatively rare in her part of the country, but she was visited by a cardinal that landed on her hand for a few minutes before taking flight again. She and other members of the family took this as a heavenly blessing/messenger. Heavenly Father gives us messages in the manner that we can understand. Good luck on your journey. Listening to you, I feel a spirit of familiarity that I have felt a few other times with other people that I have never met, but I know spiritually.

One of my favorite St George Temple stories - In 1877 when it was dedicated Brigham Young was displeased with how short the tower was, but the builders insisted it not be changed. Within a few months of dedication, Brigham passed. About a year later lightning struck the tower, and it burned. It was rebuilt to Brigham's specifications.

I just watched this on YouTube and I can relate to what you’re saying. My background was a bit different but my journey took me to many Protestant churches before learning more about the LDS church. I became a Christian at 25 after being raised Jewish. I am going on 60 and found so much of the love of Jesus Christ consistently throughout the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints than in so many of the other churches that I previously belonged to. I’ve seen the love given to even estranged members of the LDS church which is how I happened upon this church. I became a member on July 19th, 2021 and am so thankful to Our Heavenly Father for leading me here. My faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ has grown so much more deeply and the love, care & support that the church extends to each other is truly how, I believe, that Our Savior set the example for us to follow. I am grateful every day for this and it has really changed my life. It took me a while to come to believe as they do, but I do see it so clearly now. Faith❤

David! Just finished watching this video. As always, I can tell you’re allowing the Spirit to guide your steps towards finding your spiritual “home.” So many of us who have joined the church come from other faith traditions and have been thru a similar journey and like you, had signs along the way that guided us “home.” I especially love your temple tour videos because it reminds me of when I first discovered the beautiful purpose they serve…Currently, I serve in my ward as the Temple and Family History Leader and teach a Temple Preparation class. All that we do in the temple points us towards our Savior, Jesus Christ! All I want to say to you as a brother in Christ is, ALWAYS let the Spirit of the Lord guide your steps… even when you don’t understand it… The Spirit will teach you and guide you! Stay open and humble to Him and He will keep revealing himself to you, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. And btw, there is great purpose in honoring our past, because it prepares us for what He has in store for us in the future! Love you Bro, thank you again for keeping it all VERY real!!! 👍🏼😇

I'm a Latter-day Saint convert of a little over 10 years. I'm loving your videos! I really appreciate that you come to our Church services and our temples with an open mind and willingness to learn something, even if you disagree. Sadly not everyone's as nice as you. I really hope that you continue to come closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ as you attend services at our Church and with other faiths!

WOW!!!!! I had chills from head to toe this whole video! I am blown away by this tender and heart felt video! David you are SO loved by God, and he IS leading you! You are also being blessed for sharing the importance of Jesus Christ! He IS the center of this church. It is HIS church. I know you can feel the Holy Ghost when you have gone to these sacred spaces also when you share your feelings and things you have experienced too! You are loved by your Father in Heaven. We all love you too as odd as it may seem. I pray for you and put your name in the temple regularly. May you feel strength, knowledge and hope. I know God is blessing you in these endeavors. What an exciting time of your life. I am sure your ancestors are there to help you too.
  • @sultryglebe
David! This was great. I wanted to share some similarities I have with you, in a way. My dad was the only one in his family who joined the church. He was in his mid-twenties when he joined and found out (or may have known) that his great-grandfather, Daniel Seaman, was a member of the early church. He had even been called by Joseph Smith to serve a mission to New York back in the 1830s. While in New York his wife became very ill and he had to take his family back to Canada, where she died. When he finally made his way back to Nauvoo it was after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith when all those splinter groups were taking off. He didn’t know who to follow and ended up going up to Beaver Island after Jessie Strang (the Strangites!) but found out after getting there that it wasn’t what he expected. He took a boat off the island of the Strangites and ended up founding Drummond Island, Michigan. Anyway, that family lost connection with the church until 4 generations later when my dad joined. And thanks to my dad, I was raised in the church and got to serve a mission! So I was the first in my family to serve a mission since the first Latter-day missionary of our family, Daniel Seaman. And my dad has been able to do all the temple work for his ancestors going back to Daniel Murray Seaman (and even further back). What an incredible blessing it has been! Also, I have had some significant spiritual events in my life symbolized by birds. Not to the extent that yours are, but I definitely recognized that the Lord was confirming a spiritual truth to me with the visit of birds. It’s not weird at all! Though, probably rare. I have loved your videos! Keep it up!😊😊😊
  • Don’t dismiss the ‘serendipities’ that keep presenting themselves to you. They are clear signs that your spirit is aligning with the source of all light and truth. ❤
  • @crazyaboutcards
Hi David, My ancestors were called to settle the St George area and they helped with the temple. My Great grandparents lived just a few blocks from the temple, and we could see it from their home. When we visited, I always loved taking pictures of the temple through the trees from different angles. It's so strikingly white and beautiful. I love the contrast of the temple and the surrounding hills. The St George Temple is very important to me, and it was where I chose to receive my own endowment, even though I grew up in California. Family history is very important to temple work. Our ancestors do get our attention in various ways. I testify to you that they absolutely do. I suspect those cardinals are even more of a sign than you realize. Keep your mind open and your heart humble. The Lord is drawing you to the truth. Whether you ever choose to join the church or not, your experiences learning about it and studying will bless you so much. You have so many LDS friends (many of us who you've never met) who will support you along the way, no matter what you choose. You are the most genuine YouTuber I know of. I'm so grateful for the tremendous work you've done. It's blessed me and so many others! I've had fun sharing things from your channel with my family as well. Much love! Keep the videos coming!
