Purple Line Highlights 2023

Published 2022-12-30
Much progress has been made on the Purple Line in 2022, and we look forward to an exciting 2023!

Here are a few:

-In April, we signed our new design-builder, Maryland Transit Solutions
-Work resumed on the Riverdale Park-Kenilworth Avenue Station that will provide a flyover for a key East-West Highway intersection.

-The bus loop at the College Park Metro Station was reconfigured and opened in June. It provides a link from the Purple Line to Metro’s Green & Yellow lines & MDOT MTA’s MARC train.

-One of three concrete pours was completed on the bridge over Rock Creek in Chevy Chase for Purple Line trains. Another bridge will be for pedestrians.

-Crews finished building the Glenridge Operations and Maintenance Facility in Hyattsville. Stormwater management work continues, as does construction of 100 catenary foundations.

-By the end of 2022, 26 of 28 light rail vehicles were built. They will start shipping here from Elmira, New York in 2023.

-Crews poured concrete on the Connecticut Avenue bridge in Chevy Chase, which will connect to a future Purple Line station.

-A gantry crane was installed at the Bethesda station for work on the elevator shaft. The elevator will eventually take Purple Line riders to Metro’s Red Line station below.

-New track was installed, and concrete was poured on Campus Drive, connecting the College Park Metro Station with the University of Maryland.

-Crews completed the Sleaford Road underpass in Chevy Chase. Residents can use the trail beneath to walk or bike.
