I'm from India and once I had to explain to my iPhone user friends what iMessage and FaceTime are. They literally had no idea about these features. Literally, nobody cares about iMessage in India.

The weirdest thing is that a load of USA citizens seem to think you're poor if you don't have a iphone. It's such a weird take, however it shows how good you can market to the usa to fleece them from their money.

I bought my brother an android for Christmas and he cried. He was 15. Luckily, I included the gift receipt and he returned it for a two year old used iPhone. It blew my mind.

Choosing a phone based on the messaging app is like buying a car based on the way the horn sounds

Speaking as an Australian living in a 50/50 iPhone-Android marketshare, nobody really cares about any of the "features" of iMessage. To us it's just "the text message app".
  • From an european persoective this whole blue bubble green bubble discussion is so funny to me. I live in Switzerland and everybody just uses Whatsapp. I‘ve never even used imessage. Most people I know that use an iphone just use it because i‘ts easier or they like the design or ios.

7:30 this is so true, I'm currently in highschool and one of my friends recently switched from Samsung to Apple because he wanted the blue bubbles and wanted to be in group chats. When he switched, he also got an apple watch which ties into your other point about the ecosystem.
  • Speaking as an Indian....where the iPhone is now gaining some market share....a common user of the iphone in india uses whatsapp because almost everyone has a WhatsApp app for messaging, video call, voice call, sharing & storing documents and what not. The only reason people are now buying iPhones in india is Because now every other good phone is in that range and Plus iPhone's update game is really good. For iMessage its a just text message app.

All 3 of my kids have iPhones and the wife and I have a S24 Ultra and Pixel Fold. My oldest said that people that don't have iPhones don't have money. Mind you, this is coming from a teenager without a job and a free phone. I immediately told the kids that the phones they have now will be the last iPhones they will ever have unless they buy new ones themselves.
  • Apart from the US, basically nobody uses SMS or RCS anymore. WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, Signal etc come to mind before even considering sending a SMS/RCS. This is probably because, (at least in my country) SMS messages are limited while WhatsApp and the others use Wi-Fi or Mobile Data, which are basically unlimited. The only time I personally use RCS is when I receive automatic texts from companies or when I can't connect to the internet.
  • What’s crazy… the fact I literally had the Samsung S24 Ultra for a week and returned it to get my iPhone 13 back. All. Because. Of. iMessage. Everyone within my immediate circle, family AND friends have iPhone. EVERYONE. I had the Apple Watch, TV, iPad, MacBook, but the moment I switch the sheer inconvenience of switching for myself and those that interact around was to hard. Had to switch back. As a Mexican that jumps walls, these walls in the apple garden were too tall my friend.

Android user in Asia here. The biggest reason I'm not an iPhone user is because of this eco system. I want my freedom of choice when it comes to techs and gadgets thanks.

2 reasons why it's not a monopoly outside US: 1. Whatsapp 2. Price An iPhone in the US costs less than 1 month of minimum salary, while in countries like Brazil, it costs around 5-10 months salaries.
  • I was dying at Marques tossing the phones behind him and having another ready within a second. 🤣
  • @NeoDoug1
Ironically, the "walled garden" is the reason I will never buy an Apple product...
  • @xinfree
the fact that USA citizen can't download a single chat app and keep saying blue bubble vs green bubble, blows my mind you download all your other apps, whats so different of downloading another chat app that is more universal for everyone else

I live in England and I can confirm growing up through my teenage years people were elitist with Apple being the only good phone product. I owned Samsung for most of my life and I felt pressured in a way to switch. People would make jokes that an Android phone was a phone for drug dealing.

The other thing about iPhones that's so weird to me is something I feel like no one ever mentions: most iPhone users seem to upgrade their phone every year. There are plenty of Android users that do too, but it seems more prevalent with iPhones. People think that if they don't have the latest iPhone they'll be called poor. I can't imagine paying over $1000 every year just to get what is almost the exact same phone.
