MTG | How much influence do Youtubers have on the market?

Published 2024-06-19
Hey folks!

Today we are talking about how Youtubers seem to able to influence the market, but often take advantage of the situation before they do. For the record: My channel is obviously to small for that, and i wouldn't dare assuming i have any influence at all, but hey, even i see weird coincidences after i talk about certain things ;)!

In my opinion Rudy, the Professor, AlphaHoarder, Dual Brain, you and a few others really have an impact on the market but in a positive way. I started playing in the 90's and left the game like 10 years after. I came across Rudy around 2019 and that made me go back this time to be a small collector of vintage cards.

A lot! And that's a good thing as long as it's people like yourself!

I think you have an influence on me. My interest in artist Proofs was reinvigorated by your videos - unfortunately prices are too high now. I loved this video 😂 it’s ok to ramble some times. I have filmed a couple like this but deleted them 😅 but now that I see how entertaining they are I’ll publish them next time.🍻 If people like you and your videos they’ll like this one. And if they don’t…😊 Btw, Yoda said he’s gonna buyout the timetwisters 😮

Here in Denmark the OS/Vintage scene is blowing up. We got a shift some of the long time OS players is moving to pre-modern and there is a good deal of new OS players. Which makes for a very busy trading/selling/buying scene the Danish FB trading/selling groups have like 10 posts a day. OS tournament in Copenhagen for 48 players I think It was. Was sold out in 6 hours.

Def keep up the content on older cards. I feel like you are the only one still talking about older cards right now while everyone else is stuck on MH3.

I'm not going to name names because I don't want to start drama, but I have a anecdote. I was working at a game store that had our store on TCGPlayer. We got an order one time for every one of a specific Magic card we had. I recognized the name from a decently sized MTG channel, and was like woah that's kinda weird. But, then a few days later I saw their new gameplay episode and I saw that card have a huge impact on the game.... and then a couple days after that I saw that that card spiked a whole bunch. I wonder how much money that person made from flipping those cards.

I think we all feel the market shifting again. How far? Yoda only knows.

    In 10 years you will be a Sorcery-Legend 😎

I can tell ya depending on what your trying to move in the market ya can definitely alter the market. especially on cards that don't move much

Youtubers can definitely cause short term price swings by influencing the demand side of the equation just like how whales influence the supply side. The delta between supply and demand is all that matters. Youtubers also increase the market size over time.

Jürgen, sehen wir uns in Essen? 😊
  • To be fair, vintage mtg collecting is a VERY niche hobby. I don't think most of us fully realize how small our community actually is. We definitely have the biggest "whales" of any TCG, so I think the volume of purchasing is just more concentrated within a smaller group of people than other TCGs. That creates an illusion making the market appear deeper than it really is. I mean how many vintage mtg channels are there on YouTube with more than 1k subscribers? I don't even think there's 10. There's you, Rudy, AlphaHoarder, Dual Brain MTG, Vintage MTG, Gem Mint MTG, and a few others. And every channel on that list has watched videos from every other channel on that list. How many other hobbies could you say that about?

For Pokemon the investbros are 100% responsible for pumping cards and sets. For MTG...not so much. There is less hoarding for appreciation with MTG because there are just too many cards and sets
