Hollow Knight is pretty light on Easter eggs, but there are a few vague connections we can make between it and the games and media that influenced Team Cherry. But like anything in Hollow Knight, it's hard to truly know how intentional these connections might be.

Remember that the video is called Hidden Easter Eggs in Hollow Knight, so if you were thinking "there's no way Dung Defender is a reference to James Corden", then you simply did not see it, because it was hidden.

The bench in Hollow Knight is a reference to the bench in your local park near you. Signaling to the player that it's time to get out of the house and touch grass XD
  • The character known as Hornet is actually a reference to another one of team cherry’s game called Silksong. Very cool of them to put these small easter eggs
  • @osku2290
If you look closely at the enemies in the mantis village you might notice they are a reference to the bug in real life called the praying mantis
  • @exzyyd392
The jellyfish actually do suck the life out of things. It's just the actual player trying to get through the area instead of the character
  • @parknplay8328
This is kind of an obscure reference, but the entire game is actually just the game "Dark Souls" which is an easter egg referencing the relatively unknown game "Dark Souls"
  • I’m just surprised Will and Ari decided to officially recognize Easter in their fantasy universe about bugs. Must be staunchly religious.

Jumping is a very important mechanic in Hollow Knight, they also had a lot of jumping in Banjo-Kazooie, which was one of the the most beloved Metroidvanias of all time.
  • @Notale3
You forgot the sly battle being a reference to Yoda fighting in the prequels.
  • I never realized just how similar CoT and the places from Angel's Egg look like. Kinda makes me think that's how the city would look like in 3D
  • @Pit1620
"to avoid a copyright strike from Nintendo, I can only play a bit of the song" literally played Brinstar Depths for a whole segment of the video
  • Fun fact: the Knight, Hollow Knight, Nailmasters, and other characters' use of Nails as weapons is a reference to swords, a lesser-known weapon used in combat and warfare especially in the middle ages, but all the way up to the World Wars due to their usefulness as a primary weapon as well as versatility as a sidearm. It was really cool of Team Cherry to include a reference to such an unknown part of human history.
  • I swear the fine-tooth comb this man is holding onto as he waits for silksong is just incredible his fingers have molded with the handle with just the amount of Sanity he's has until it's released.🤣
  • @Vivat_Veritas
If you look closely in Hollow Knight, you can tell that most the characters are actually bugs. This is a niche reference to bugs, a type of organism that exists on Earth. Pretty cool for Team Cherry to do so, since not many people know about them.

I always thought that grubberfly's elegy is a refrence to Zelda, with the whole sword beams at max HP. Or in this case nail beams.
  • @SemiHypercube
Probably been pointed out already but the Grubberfly's Elegy charm seems to be directly based off the sword beam ability in some of the Legend of Zelda games (sword fires a projectile with each slash, but only when at full health)
  • This may sound like a stretch, but the art for the player character in Hollow Knight might be inspired by the game "Hungry Knight", a short little game by a strange developing team called "Team Cherry". I've never heard of them, but Hungry Knight seems like a cool game. I'll have to look at their other games.

I mean, clearly Hollow Knight is actually a giant reference to A Bug's Life, with a slight homage to the greatest animated movie of all time - The Bee Movie. That is why The Hive is absolutely the best area from Hollow Knight, to celebrate the magnificence of The Bee Movie.

3:22 What a weird way to see my backer message for the first time, I must've put 100+ hours into HK and never found the Shrine of Believers. And yeah, it was a dark souls reference. Doesn't the vessel look like a little bony guy? Maybe Good Luck, Exoskeleton would've been better
