Digging straight down can be actually really good because once I dug straight and went into to a mine shaft and I got diamonds

How about something similar to this where You dig down 5 or 10 blocks then you have to change direction Forward back left or right for 5 or 10 blocks and then dig down again 5 or 10 blocks. Each time you change direction it has to be a different direction. Example it's the 1st time I change direction you go forward On the following direction change you have to go left or right you can't go backwards. Only digging down never digging up.
