Camping In An Igloo On Lake Winnipesaukee

Published 2009-01-22
Two friends and I camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire in January 2009. Eli, who got his degree in outdoor education, has taught Jan and me how to build the igloo. I've slept in winter tents before, but this is better. It's Jan's first time winter camping. What does he think of it, come morning?

This was a quinzee (sp?) which I was told is a type of igloo. Rather than use blocks, one piles up the snow into a large mound and hollows out the interior. You are correct; it is not the traditional snow-block igloo.

Well thats not really an igloo. Thats more of a snow cave. The difference? Well igloo's use blocks of snow and a snow cave uses a pile of snow. It's like saying that a trailer is the same thing as a log cabin....just because it's in the woods.
