This video is not about all depression, but it is the story of my depression. It is not meant as advice, and if you need or want help please see the resources posted below.

All too often, people who are depressed isolate themselves from those they love or others who may be able to help. Isolation can make depression feel worse and increase the risk that a person will experience suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Helplines are available to those who feel like they need someone to talk to but may not know where to start.

  • Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question, "am I alone in suffering from depression?" Well you're not. Thank you, Professor <3
  • I'm late to the party but I'd upvote this a million times if I could. Thank you for sharing your story with us Prof.!
  • "It doesn't even make me happy, but it makes me neutral. And that to me is happiness." this is so well worded
  • Professor, i dont think you’ll ever realize how many people you’ve actually helped by publishing this video. I would have never thought you live with depression. Keep up the good fight ✊🏽
  • I believe Ricky Gervais said it best. "Telling someone with depression to pull themselves together is about as useful as telling someone with cancer to just stop having cancer."
  • Prof, I want you to know that if there's any community that is more warm and accepting of these sorts of things, it's the Magic community. I've gone through Asperger's Syndrome (it's basically a mental syndrome like dyslexia, but it makes my memory really good, but makes me snobby and bad at social interaction, there's more to it than that but it's mostly not important)and magic actually helped me overcome some of the downsides through essentially forced social interaction whilst playing an intellectual game. It takes serious balls to talk about this and I respect the hell out of you for doing this. Your community loves you man. P.S I know that Aspergers is not a mental illness because it has advantages, but it sure feels like it sometimes.

"It doesn't even make me happy, but it makes me neutral. And that to me is happiness." - Nicely put <3
  • We love you Prof. Thanks for bearing your heart, it’s sure to help many others who are in the same situation.
  • PLEASE READ THIS: Depression and anxiety have ruled a large portion of my life. I lost my best friend and my grandmom to a car accident. I lost my mom to cancer, and I lost my big brother to Suicide. My dad has extremely severe depression and we have been very vary close to being homeless and even starving. Now just a couple of years later I am married to my beautiful wife, we have a home, a family, everything I lost and I thought I would never have again. I still fight depression and anxiety every day but I guess my point is that when your depression tells you happiness is out of your reach its a damn lie. We love you Prof. You are a role model to all of us, and if you need someone to have a personal conversation with I am here for you. I mean you don't know me but I'll do anything I can to offer advice and support if you need that ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
  • "My resting position is not neutral. It's two notches below other people's." You've articulated something that resonates with me, Prof. I am not unfamiliar with the "work" needed to be done on a daily basis to get myself back up to normal. I hope you are feeling well. Thank you for sharing your experience.
  • Wow, you're actually THAT strong to speak about your hardships to a huge ammount of people. Guess i've just found another reason to take examples from you, Prof. Thank you.
  • "It makes me neutral, and that to me is happiness". I know this is a 2 year old story, but thanks for sharing this prof! Vulnerability is hard, especially when you have no idea whos on the other side of the camera. Thanks for being real!
  • I love how this is channel is helpful in all aspects from economics to personal issues. This is an amazing channel with support everywhere keep up what you're doing if no one else appreciates this i do
  • I know this is one of your older vids but I totally relate. I’m taking massive steps to being a whole person one day. Many hugs my friend
  • Hey Prof (and TCC staff)! I just wanted to comment and say that despite this video being over 4 years old people like myself are still finding it, and still getting a bit of help from it. My depression is very stealthy (not even Yuriko could compare), and I think that as a result of dealing with it for so long now I've become a little desensitized to it's presence. Seeing this video just now helped me to recognize that it has become a problem again. The video was somewhat of a wake up call, and after looking up from the screen and seeing how messy my environment is, and realizing that I've gone two days without addressing my hygiene I find myself understanding that I am suffering from this illness yet again. Thank you for helping me recognize that I may need to get some help, and for helping me recognize that I need to begin taking the necessary steps towards a better and happier life. You (and everyone involved with the channel) are more valuable to this community in more ways than I ever would have thought possible. Thanks again for everything that you do.
  • Wow dude. Thank you so much for sharing. This is a very difficult subject to talk about that so many people (myself included) have had to deal with. It's always nice to know you are not alone in this battle. Keep strong and thank you again.
  • @DrJack144
I have a relationship w depression as well. And I have a PhD and a great job. It strikes a lot of people who you'd never expect. Pat on the back, Brian!
  • @GenJotsu
It's true. Even with such physical signs such as malnutrition, neglected usual hygiene, social avoidance, and debilitating energy levels, people think sadness is the same as clinical level depression. It can be fatal, and everyone needs to learn to be more compassionate and aware of such ailments.
  • I think this video was made before I even started playing MtG. It's completely thrown me seeing Prof in a t-shirt, but I am thankful for this video. It wasn't ham-fisted. It wasn't too personal or too impersonal. It wasn't subtle and it wasn't matter of fact and it wasn't blatant or blasé. It was just very human and I really appreciate that. Thank you Brian.
