Marvin Panch wins the third running of the Daytona 500 held on February 26, 1961. Noticeably absent from the race was both Lee Petty and his son Richard who were injured in their respective qualifying races. Lee suffers life threatening injuries in his wreck and the inaugural winner of the Daytona 500 would never race the high banks of Daytona again. Fireball Roberts is the fastest qualifier and is leading the field by a full lap when his engine lets go with just 13 laps to go. Marvin Panch inherits the lead and goes on to his only Daytona 500 victory.

Fun Fact: Ralph Lee Earnhardt was in the No. 88 in this race.
  • 151 mph. In only 7 yrs time, they were up 30 mph to over 181 mph. And guess who won the pole here in '67. It was Curtis Turner in ......yet again: Smokey's '66 Chevelle that NO ONE believed could run with the mighty Ford's & Mopars. They lost the engine of course & Mario Andretti won in a Ford. Then Smokey created the now iconic '67 Chevelle to run either the '67 or '68 ( I can't remember ) Daytona 500.......but the officials wouldn't even allow him to test the car, let alone race it. I should be getting Smokey's book ( the NASCAR years edition ) by tomorrow or Monday, and I can hardly wait. I bet I won't be able to put that book down. Ordered the book just last night, and get this: Just this morning, Smokey's daughter Trish called me personally to get the 3 digit security code off the back of my debit card to complete the order. She explained that she HAS TO do it this way due to the cyber crooks ripping her off at Carbon Press. They got her for thousands of dollars via multiple big online orders. But she was SO nice and without me even asking, she engaged me in a pleasant conversation about her late Father Smokey Yunick!!! I was blown away to say the least. GOOD PEOPLE. Seeing as how I only live 150 miles south of Daytona, she said I should get my book in only 2 days & that she was personally shipping it out today. My only regret is never getting to meet Smokey, because we moved down here back in '69.

Love it! Good ole days when they actually ran a factory made car... not like todays nascars.. custom made race only cars...

Factory 421 Super Duty Pontiacs dominated NASCAR until GM pulled the plug at the end of 63.  Back then racing engines like the Super Duty,  63 Chevy Mark2 mystery motor and the 64-65 Hemi were produced by the dozens and doled out to selected racers.  NASCAR changed the rules for 65 and required racing engines to be installed in cars and produced in a number equal to the number of dealerships.  This ended the Hemi for 65, and stopped the Ford cammer motor cold.  Chrysler answered in 66 by building over 1,000 street Hemis, it was back.  Took Ford until 69 to do the same with the Boss 429.

At 1:42, there's a car at the top of the screen that spun out. Don't know if anyone noticed it at first.

Hey, let's go sit as close as we can, to a bunch of 150 mph cars, and hope they don't crash into us.

Marvin Panch told me he won that race on one set of tires. Heavy duty truck tires.
