São Jorge is a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It is also home to one of the richest and most elaborate cheeses on Earth: São Jorge cheese. The volcanic geology of the island means that its soil is rich and fertile. Its location in the middle of the ocean guarantees a mild, damp climate all year round. The result is abundant vegetation that basically never dies and cows that are able to graze freely 365 days a year. These conditions pack São Jorge cheese with moisture, hints of spiciness, and a grassy scent.

I am just amazed at how Claudia can understand Portugese when she is Italian who also speaks French and English. Kudos to this family who's still making cheese the traditional way even though most on the islands are producing it commercially. I hope they have a fair chance at selling their cheese.
  • The Azores are stunning. I would've thought this was some where in Ireland or the UK if no one told me. For a small country, Portugal got a lot to offer.

There is a Portuguese bakery in my city in Quebec that sells this cheese and it is one of my favourites!

Claudia is a phenomenal host. Polyglots are so rare, and to be so genuine in her approach makes for an incredible talent.

I visited azores once for 8 days.. Best trip ever. Their cheese plate on the main island was 8e and the best cheese i ever had with fresh bread and pineapple, pumpkin and chilli jam. All you need is a glass or two of nice wine and your soul thrives like it never did before

Another excellent episode. And of course Claudia understands Portuguese. 😀 I had a cheese plate when I visited Lisbon. I wonder if São Jorge was included.

I've been waiting on this video since the cheese series started! My parents were born and raised on the islands, and I've always had a pride for the Azores! St George cheeze on a Portuguese roll (papo seco) with some butter is a staple in my house!
  • Awesome program! I love that you featured this small family cheese making business.

São Jorge cheese and São Miguel cheese from a diferent island but both from the azores island, are without a doubt two of the best cheeses in the world.
