Rainbow Six Siege Was Almost The #1 FPS Game...

Rainbow Six Siege. A game that was nearly written off in 2016, would just two short years later, become a premier FPS title. Bolstering hundreds of thousands of monthly players and a healthy esports ecosystem. Nowadays, the player counts are a fraction of what they were, and the once-healthy esports scene is barely alive. So what happened to Rainbow Six Siege, and why did it fail to become the #1 FPS game?

Well researched and brilliantly written! As someone who joined the Siege team later on in its story (at the tail end of year 5), it's always fascinating to hear the stories of how it got to where it is today. You hear some of it from within of course, but every source brings with it a new nuance, and the way it's presented here gives me a perspective I don't always get from inside. I may not know what the future holds for Siege (well, not everything at least), but I do know that there is still a dedicated team that will do everything in its power to see the game eventually reach that #1 spot. I hope I get to see that happen. That would be neat.

Siege's greatest downfall was being owned by Ubisoft. Case and point.

I feel like a battered spouse playing siege. Remembering the good ole days when Siege was my highschool sweetheart. Fresh and fun, always looking for what’s coming next. Now they keep taking away my fun toys and gaslighting me by saying that I’m playing with them wrong.
  • The game became soulless in design. Back at release and good few years after that it had the perfect feeling to it - cold, gritty, tactical, realism-leaning military shooter, something that was missing on the market. Somewhere starting 2020 the game started creating hero-esque characters, it was no longer about top special forces operators that worked as a collective, it was about how we can make an 'unique' mary jane character that represents some party running around in a stadium arena instead of you know, shooting terrorists? And obviously the terrible balance changes proposed over the years, some just not making plain sense or removing a feature that was there since day one. I think people tend to forget that devs team were switched at some point so it's easy to tell when the game fell off specifically, the people that developed this game from the scratch are long gone, the people currently working on it have joined the team some time ago.

The shift in tone is why I went from loving siege to hating it. When it started: hardcore tactical shooter with a serious counter-terrorist setting How it is now: hyper-competitive headshot-spray-centric esport with cartoonish setting If I wanted cartoonish I’d play overwatch. If I’m dying in one headshot I want it to feel like Ready or Not, etc.

I'm taking away your cooking licence, and promoting you to head chef. Keep doing what you're doing, G. Apex next plz, as they appear to be releasing a fat update soon for 5th anniversary.

Getting recommended this channel only to hear a familiar voice! I imagine you’re trying to see if this sinks or swims without cross promotion, which is respect the hell out of. Build a new audience! I always felt that your long form discussion vids were some of your best. But the core siege audience didn’t seem to appreciate them nearly enough. Hoping to still see stuff from your main channel (which i still love) but happy to be here on this next step! Keep it up!
  • I said it before and I say it again, the change from dynamic to static lighting and the removal of night maps, goes to show you, that the original art style of the game was thrown out of the window, in favor of the sterile and more esport friendly look of the game. Atmosphere is what makes a game a good game. It's not just the gameplay, but also the feel to it. Also, good video, very informative.

one of the saddest downfalls to me, played the beta / full game up until 2021, game just started feeling like every match was a Esports tournament, + the “childish” cartoony elements and battlepass just sealed its fate. i was 13 when i started playing, almost 21 now and it’s like i wouldn’t even play it if it came out in 2024

The thing I hate the most is that I paid for a product that I technically don’t have anymore. If the company’s would give some sort of way to just simply play our favorite versions of the games I wouldn’t have much of a problem. I want to play the game I enjoyed those years ago, the game I put my money on, not what it is now

Pleasantly surprised this was recommended, I always loved your longer form discussion videos
  • @HamaIicious
Rainbow six is the greatest example why you shouldn’t listen to competitive players
  • I must admit that when i saw the video and then checked your channel, i was suprised you only have 3.6 k subs. A video of the highest quality, congrats, earned my sub for sure.
  • @AzureWolfie
I'm in love with your video production and story telling. Glad to be here so early in your development!
  • @shredbacca
one of my favorite games even now. i still play it not as much as i once used to but as a 10yr siege veteran i cant seem to stay away always wanting to come back to it after some point

In 2015-2016 inthought this was the Most innovative game ive played in a long time, relating to online MP shooters anyway. They added so many operators and gadgets over the years (not necessarily a bad thing, content is content) it was a game you had to stay on top of to be or remain proficient at. I liked it alot, and am happy to see that it eventually took off for nearly andecade. Ifnyou remeber, it was almost dead at/after launch. But they actually put the work into it.
