What Ever Happened to t.A.T.u.?

Have you ever found yourself wondering what happened to this obscure Russian girl band from the early 2000s?

Well, it's your lucky day!

(Or not because Trigger Warning homophobia is mentioned and discussed heavily in this video).

I've had "All The Things She Said" living rent free in my head for like two decades and in a moment of clarity, I wondered what happened to the band who made that controversial earworm all those years ago.

In a galaxy brain moment, I decided it would make for a fun video!

Enjoy!

Huuuuge special thanks to the writers of the articles and contributors on Reddit who provided the information seen in this video.

  • Thank you all so much for watching!! Remember to share what obscure Eastern Europian early 2000s pop icons you'd like a deep dive on next! Jk. This is the only one I care about, sorry.
  • Great video! To give some more background, the girls were never lesbians. Shapalov decided the lesbian act would produce mass appeal. They were 15 when they recorded the Russian version of All The Things She Said. On the subject of Julia’s interview (Julia is the English form of Yulia). The interview was taken out of context on a government run network. She said that she didn’t want a gay son because of the climate in Russia because their society glorifies lesbians but condemns gay men. She didn’t want her son to live that hardship. It was switched up to make her come across more crass and Russia approved. Julia apologized for the interview at a show she did at Central Station (a gay club in Moscow). Lena publicly has supported the LGTB community. There’s an interview they did a couple years ago with both girls and their ex producer that has English subs. Worth a watch. As for their split, even us die hard fans have no idea other than there’s deep tensions between them. They cancelled a reunion tour in 2014 because of the tensions. There’s another reunion between them coming up, but with the tensions between Russia and Ukraine, it’s unclear if it is still happening. Hope this gives a bit more background 😁
  • Hey I'm a little bit late, but I have a few things to say. I'm gonna be honest I'm still part way through your video right now so sorry if I say anything that does not line up with things that you said in the video. I think if you really wanted to you should watch this interview from 2021 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-lvHKc8_9k&t=3129s it's a long video, but I think it says a lot about what their experiences really were. They talked about it a lot in other interviews, but unlike the "Dangerous and Moving" album cycles they didn't feel the pressure to say "oh yeah it actually wasn't an act" in this interview. And honestly if you want to learn more I learned that watching the interviews are better than the articles. There was a surprising amount of documentaries made with/about them, and a lot of interviews too. And actually you weren't exactly wrong from the beginning. Ivan Shapovalov was not exactly the best man either. Just look up some information about the video prostye dvizheniya. Also, it is correct that they were around the age of 17-18 during the All The Things She Said era, but that doesn't include the entire russian version of that album. For the video for Ya Soshla S Uma and All The Things She Said (translated versions of each other) the girls were only like 15-ish. Again if you really want to learn more I'd recommend the interview from 2021. Also, give some of their other music a listen. Honestly, even though I like their biggest hits I don't think that they are the most accurate representation of that band. And I cannot stress how underrated some of their russian versions of these songs are. Plus, the entire Dangerous and Moving/ Lyudi Invalydi albums are also crazy underrated. Sorry to go on for so long. Loved the video btw.
