With this video I'd like to help all those tube amp fanatics who are interested in how these three amps compare, from clean through single coil overdrive to humbucker mid-gain rock, punk and metal.

For this comparison I used my Zilla 2x12 Fatboy cabinet with two different speakers in it: The Celestion Vintage 30 was recorded with an SM57 microphone, while the G12H-Anniversary was miked up with an Electro-Voice RE20 and an AKG c214 microphones, so this speaker is also the dominant in the final mix.

The guitar being used is an Epiphone Modern with splitable mid-output humbucker pickups.

The audio files are carefully loudness-matched.

I tried to set up the amps for each music piece according to my taste, which happened to be an almost flat EQ, moderate gain for rock, punk and metal and a little dirt in the clean channel for the clean parts.

The riffs I played for the comparison are my original songs that I plan to publish on a future album.

  • I finally got the opportunity to try it a Revv G20 yesterday and it did not disappoint. Amazing amp! However, I don’t think I would be disappointed with any of these. All great amps!

superb and helpfull, be great to hear it again over a drumtrack for context and that mid throat on the engl may win, they all sound good here but i think the engl may be more focused in a mix
  • Fantastic video. I'm now more confused than ever. Thought I had narrowed it down to the ironball but now the revv g20 and got me thinking. Value for money, options and sound, what did you prefer in the room?

Tried them all...ENGL for me. Tubemeister was really nice but the very high gain clean channel didn't perform vs ENGL to my ears and there's more room for crazyness in solos on the other channel. I appreciate the digital effects on the back (reverb/delay) and their adjustability. I detest pedals and refuse to bother with them (anything except a switch). I also think the 1 watt version of the ENGL is better behaved that the 1 watt version of the H&K. Also the H&K looks like it belongs in a strip-club in the 'ethnic' part of town lol. REVV out of the running, obviously.
  • Why does the H&K sound like its on the brink of breaking? I love the looks and features but that sound is just.... underwhelming...is just me? I have a good deal on one but I just don't know if I should spend the money or save up for something better. Bedroom producer here btw.
