We’re now in part three of our series on dogs being able to respond when they are far away, and I’ve got a training plan for you. It’s super important for your dog’s safety that they can listen at a distance and come when called. A recall from something like deer or bunnies all begins with your dog being able to listen close by, and in part three, we’re growing the fundamental skills to listening off leash and away from you.

In the episode you'll hear:
• The errors you might be making in training sit, down and stand.
• All the ways you can proof your dog’s understanding of your cues.
• How we want our dogs to be able to think even if they are excited.
• Why you need to know if your dog is really listening or just guessing.
• That you need to be on Team Distraction before you are on Team Distance.
• The training steps to grow and test your dog’s listening abilities with position changes.
• That what you are teaching might not be what your dog is learning.
• How to fix common challenges with position changes at a distance.
• About the importance of reinforcing away from you for your dog to listen far away.
• How to transition from inside your house to outside to grow layers of understanding.

  • I can hardly think my dog can learn all this, but then I know she can. Yep 👍

Susan. Please do an episode on the mechanics of exactly what to do when the dog breaks the position, or makes a mistake. How exactly do you respond to the behavior and what do you do to reset? I think the people who say “sit…sit…sit…” might be doing so, because it’s not exactly clear what they should do when the dog breaks. They know they don’t want to punish the dog, but aren’t sure what they should do. I hope this is clear. I’ve been a Recaller since Day 1, and am currently starting a baby puppy with Crate Games, and still find myself stuck with this sometimes. It requires an advanced plan (i think). Would really appreciate this if you have time.

This might be my favourite episode yet, such valuable information, thank you for sharing your knowledge so freely!

Wonderful episode! This is very helpful. I can't wait to start working on this information.
  • This series of 3 podcasts are definitely 3 of my favorites so far!! Of course they are all my favorites, but this is the 1st set of podcasts that I have listened to multiple times!! Amazing information!! I have done alot of distance work with Lexi, my 12 year old Black and Tan Coonhound, BUT...I forgot 1 important step. Work simple behaviors, with distractions while I am close to her!! WOW, was I blown away in her response when I tried giving her commands while I was sitting, doing jumping jacks and lying on my tummy, while close to her!! She looked at me like I was completely crazy!! Let me just say that my 10 month old puppy, Miss Maci did much better than Lexi!! I finally have the missing puzzle piece to help Lexi succeed!! Thank you so very much Susan for sharing this wonderful knowledge of yours💞!!

Woooo! Thanks for making my day by starting with ‘it’s level 100 to recall your dog off livestock’ we practice every morning in the paddock and now my 12month Aussie shepherd can walk off leash and listen around kangaroos and horses thanks to its Yer choice ✊❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for ANOTHER great episode, lots of ideas for us to try and highlights the value of all the Recaller games. Brill!
  • My dream is that one day Windsor can walk off leash safely. But dreams do come true so I will continue to work on our Recallers games. This episode had so much information in it! Lots to work on. Thank you.

Shikazo's got pretty good inside the house. Outside, he sits better than down, about which I wonder what the difference is. Also, I have not been throwing cookies behind him when working in the distance (11:52). New insight!  The thing is, he is slow in everything he does. He sits slow, he gets down slow, walks more often instead of running when he retrieves (he does retrieve though). He is nothing wrong physically. I wonder it may be his nature.

Fenton is a GREAT example of how my cavalier Spencer would behave if he went loose in a park!! 😰😰😰😰 I go frantic just thinking about it!
  • @Maria-lf4js
I have been working through these layers with my dog and he does well to sit down when he is close to me when a toy is thrown but when he gets closer to the toy he takes a couple of extra steps to the toy before he complies to get himself in a better position to release to the toy. How do I get rid of these extra few steps toward the toy?

Can this help transition to AKC Open Obedience training?
