Koschei the Deathless | Russia's Evil Sorcerer

Published 2021-09-22
With magical powers and artefacts, immense greed and ambition, and boundless cruelty, Koschei is a powerful and terrifying villain of Slavic mythology. Despite his incredible power, Koschei fears only one thing: his own death. To gain immortality he places his soul into a needle, then hides the needle in an egg, in a duck, in a hare, in a chest, beneath an oak, on an uncharted island. With so many heroes seeking revenge against this wizard, can Koschei truly remain deathless?

MYTHOLOGY HAS BEEN TOLD AND RETOLD IN MANY FORMS ACROSS TIME, STORIES AND ACCOUNTS MAY VARY.

Man, that would be the ultimate disrespect. Imagine being like “do your worst, foul wizard! Your torture will not erode the heroism of my sacrifice!” and then he just turns you into a pile of walnuts and leaves.
  • Koschei is the supposed inspiration of modern fantasy in many RPGs especially DnD about Necromancer and Lich - beings that hold over the power of death and darkness.

I love reading fairy tales and folklore from Eastern Europe, characters are interesting like Baba Yaga, the rusalka and Koschei the Deathless. Nice to see you used snippets from one of Soyuzmultfilms animated shorts/films from the 1950s.

The embodiment of "How Many Times Do We Have to Teach You This Lesson, Old Man?"
  • @humanity600
In the description of his souls separation some have interpreted it as: Sea- Water Island- Earth Rabbit/Duck- Animals Oak- World Tree Leading some scholars to believe that he bound his soul to the very universe itself.
  • In the RPG game Dungeons and Dragons , undead wizards called Lich a have each have an object that holds their essence or soul called a phylactery . Undead dragons also have them as well .

I really do love this channel. I like how you guys concentrate on myths and stories that not many YouTubers do.

Man Russia/eastern Europe. You start out with pure terror in your folklore and see how far you can carry it into real life. I'm impressed.. terrorized but impressed. Ps mind if I get the thumbnail as a tattoo? That is badass piece of art. On par with an iron maiden album

Anyone else see the parallel between Koschei and the Ice King in Adventure Time (4:20)?
  • @zionleach3001
He's also appeared in The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing RPG game. He's known as Prisoner 7.

Look, I'm just saying we've never see Rasputin and Koshei in the same room
  • @AnjelCaido69
I'm guessing the writers of Anastasia combined him with Rasputin in the movie Anastasia
  • How cool my Mum is Russian it's nice to hear something from my roots
  • I was wondering how to pronounce his name. I read 'The firebird' to my son at bedtime (every night 😩) and I've mispronounced it each time 🤣
