From the mind of a South African madman,
Came a machine capable of knocking down the giants,
Porsche.
Ferrari.
Lamborghini.

All came to know the answer to the question,
What if a car was created without rules?

That car… would be the world’s first hypercar.
The McLaren F1.

This is THE SQUIDD, a channel devoted to telling boring stories BOLDLY. Automotive icons, car company calamities, supercar legends and underdog heroes. All told through the lens of The Squidd, automotive content creator famous for being a dude with bad hair.

So uh, how do we all feel about super long videos? 😅
  • @fastex22
The badass part of the story is the Doctor making the F1 his daily and commuting it in the autobahn at 197mph. The ultimate daily driver.
  • The doc is the literal embodiment of " I paid for the whole speedometer I'm using the whole speedometer".
  • @kvltizt
I love how inspired he was by the comparatively humble NSX
  • @S8EVE
After almost 30 years...this is still the most beautiful and special car to have ever hit the road
  • @dragonhold4
(26:59) Respects to this fellow for not locking this masterpiece away, but instead daily drove it up to 200mph.
  • The material on the exhaust is probably INCONEL not ICONEL. Inconel is also used for the 1st and 2nd baffles on firearm suppressor designs. The ability to handle the heat and the loads are what makes it special. Awesome documentary. Thank you for making it.

The production quality on this channel is unmatched; your storytelling makes me feel like I'm living the experience just as much as those that were there to witness it. I wish I could subscribe twice
  • @Ligerzeronz
Now this is what a car documentary needs to be nowadays. No bullshit playing around, just straight to the point and giving out the passion and emotions these cars give out and present it to us viewers. 100/10 score for you guys!

After such a long time I feel like I've watched a proper documentary. This was phenomenal.

The earth's fastest production car, naturally aspirated. The KING of supercars. The most fantastic car ever built. The love of my life.
  • @kgsfarm4943
Literal GOOSEBUMPS AND SPINE TINGLING experience I've rewatched this 4 times already You are sooo good at capturing the fundamental essence behind a car or a topic ONE of the best documentaries I have ever watched. Thanks 👍
  • The fact it was naturally aspirated and had a non electronic drivetrain/suspension shows you just how good those engineers were at what they do. A true engineering masterpiece.
  • @onlyhuman7420
Paul Rosche was engineering genius. He designed the F1's engine in six months. What Hans Mezger was for Porsche,Rosche was for BMW.He was truly one of the automotive engineering greats.

@19:26 VANOS is not BMW's version of VTEC. VANOS is cam phasing that changes valve timing, not valve lift and duration. Valvetronic is BMW's version of VTEC. The McLaren F1 did not have Valvetronic. The first BMW engine to have Valvetronic was the N42 in 2001. The McLaren F1 engine was the S70/2 which was based on the S70B56 (used only in the E31 850CSi) but with the head design of the S30B52 (used in the E36 M3). The S30B52 had double VANOS (intake and exhaust phasing) thus the McLaren F1 had double VANOS.

“Screaming metal death traps made by over zealous Italian men” As someone of Italian-American heritage, I approve this description
  • @hasnatplayz00
I swear this mans never fails to give me goosebumps everytime I watch him, mad respect...
  • This is like what Donut used to be. Storytelling, structure, history, the glory days of Up to Speed and Bumper to Bumper. This is superior in almost every way! Phenomenal work
  • @phantom0456
As someone who was a teenager in the mid/late 90’s and who loved cars, it’s impossible to understate just how god-tier the McLaren F1 was for its day… hell, it’s STILL god-tier, all of these nearly three decades later. There was nothing like it then, and there still is nothing quite like it even today. This was an absolutely fantastic documentary, and it did great justice to the legend that is the McLaren F1.
  • @JacketedHP90
You have an unwavering ability to compile knowledge and deliver it in a way that scares the viewer it may end too soon. Hell of a job my friend.
