Carole King is the curly haired blonde woman who wrote the song. She is a legendary songwriter. And Aretha, well, she's THE QUEEN.

That white woman reacting so strongly is the one who wrote the song - Carole King.

She didn't do this for the Obama's she did it to honor Carole King who wrote the song. The Obama's were there because it was the Kennedy Center Honors.
  • Carole King must be absolutely thrilled that she wrote this song! Beautiful message sang by the incomparable, sadly missed, Aretha Franklin as a tribute to Carole. 😍❤

The Obamas were there that night. But the performance was to honor the songwriter, Carole King, who was receiving the Kennedy Center Honors tribute that night.

Stephen Colbert was the host of the Kennedy Center Honors that year and, after Aretha Franklin died, he told the story of watching her perform. Colbert said that he was backstage with some of the other performers when she went onstage, and he made a remark to the effect that he wished he could have seen her at the top of her game. Then Colbert said, "I am a stupid, stupid man" and showed this knock-your-socks-off performance. LOL At least he admitted it; nobody should doubt the Queen of Soul.

Carol King wrote for everybody from Little Eva (who babysat for her) and the Monkees to Celine Dion and Mariah Carey to Baby Face and Mary J Blige. She played keyboard for BB King, sang with everybody for the last 50 years, put out what may be the best album ever by a female singer (Tapestry) and wrote well over a hundred top hits. Pretty good resume, huh?

when this lady passed we as a world lost a queen of soul. and part of our hearts

It was Carole King's moment but she has always been happy to share any success she had with the singers and musicians who made her songs popular. Aretha's glory is King's glory and she looked like she was having the time of her life here with Franklin at the top of her game.

Elvis may have been the King of Rock N Roll, and Michael the King of Pop, but they all bowed down to the Queen of Soul.

The white lady in the balcony was Carol King, who wrote that song and who was being celebrated for her life in music. At one time, her album called "Tapestry" was the best selling album on the charts. When Aretha Franklin sang natural woman, she took it to another level, as she always did whenever she sang someone else's music. I love both versions.

Aretha killed it, and she was 137 years old. My-T-Sharp
  • Nobody could sing like her! Her signature fur coats............love when she took it off! PS The blonde flippin out is Carol King. Love her reaction. Aretha was not in good health but nothing would stop her performing for the Obama's. The late great beautiful Aretha Franklin, RIP.
  • Aretha was a staple during my growing years....this makes me cry...she gave so much great music and soul to the years she was here.
