This episode of One Song was recorded in the Hartbeat podcast studio after a sustainable makeover of the studio. As part of the makeover, soy-based products were used, including chairs upholstered with the soy-based material produced by Modern Meadow, wall mounted photographs printed with soy-based ink, and upcycling a drum into a coffee table with wood supplied by HempWood, which contains soy-based resin.

U.S. Soy is the sponsor of this episode of One Song. U.S. soybean farmers grow and develop sustainable soy-based solutions to today’s biggest problems. Through sustainable farming and constant innovation, U.S. Soy contributes to a healthier planet today and for future generations.

This episode was produced with the support of U.S. Soy.

One of my favourite songs of all time. Thanks for the breakdown.

Tears For Fears has got so many great songs. Love them
  • I loved this episode and was sent here by a close friend as we listen through catalogs of studio recordings - including TfF. I think it's important to note, though, that the line isn't "It's hard to be a man when there's a gun to your head." I've always heard it as "...gun in your hand." So, of course I had to look it up and was correct in that assumption. It's also a (fake) gun in his hand in the video, adding credence to my original thinking when the song and then video first came out. I'm sure I'll get dinged here by commenters but the point stood out to me and they are vastly different sentiments.

At least Curt was doing 20-30%. There’s some bands where members did basically nothing and they are in the hall of fame.

After seeing all the wonderful, intricate weaving of layers in this song, I'd really love to see this treatment given to Sowing The Seeds Of Love! I imagine there's a lot of hidden treasure to be found there!

I was a few minutes into this show when you mentioned it was being filmed. I immediately followed you here too.

The intro line of this song is soooooo playerish!!!!!! He told the lady “I wanted to be with you alone, and talk about the weather”…That’s a real player line.

My favorite podcast, hands down!, thank you again for music education and conversation. I thought that broken song was a Dub version, great information

The “dada dada da” from Next Episode is pretty close to a “la la” moment for hip hop. There’s also ODB’s intro and outro on Woo-Ha but even that’s “ya ya” not “la la.” I feel like there’s definitely some “la las” in hip hop, at least from a sample, but can’t think of any examples other than those two.
  • I really enjoy your show, great episode by the way and covering it in such depth. I love your content and thank you for diving into one of my favorite songs/bands. Cheers!
  • Great, intelligent discussion! Tears for fears are an amazing musical duo and because of this discussion, it made me to appreciate Curt's bass playing even more! He has such a Paul mccartney/Peter Cetera vibe in his playing!

Curt's vocals in the background 47:30 -47:56 (aprox) sound very similar to Mad World (The Hunting 1983). Thank you! Love your work.

I fully believe that Roland was the true mastermind behind much of the music. I only believe this because of the masterpieces of his solo music.
