What The Heck Happened to the Bottom of our Boat!

Published 2024-06-21
We finally get out into the ocean on our shake-down leg to West Palm. We run into some issues with sludge in our fuel but something is definitely wrong. We can't get the starboard engine past 1000 rpm and have a strong vibration!

No way was that hull and running gear cleaned three weeks prior. Untrustworthy company I think. Hope you can use the footage to get some recompense from them!
  • It's a shame that there are companies out there ripping people off. If it were me, I'd shout 'em out!

Looks like you hired the same bottom cleaners I did years ago. Had the same exact issue and couldn't get up to RPMs and had a diver go and look and that's what we found. Good job on docking because that current around Peanut Island is brutal sometimes, especially going into Riviera Marina.
  • You were HAD. The growth on your keel and bow thruster took months to get that big and numerous.

Fire those divers saying once a month and it's 3 weeks ago done! Make them video or picture bottom ...that's what we get

Hey Guys! It was great running with you! Hope the journey on to the Bahamas went much better!
  • I had a partially closed emergency air damper on one of my Detroits--- ran fin e at 1000 rpm or lower, but black smoke thereafter. It happened that the emergency pull on the binnacle got "slightly" pulled, and the manifold damper was NOT fully deployed, but was choking off the air supply... it's a spring loaded

Love your You Tube. I had a 45' Hatteras in south Florida for 25 years and had the same fuel issues you're having when I got below 1/2 a tank. I had the tanks cleaned and the fuel polished several times but that didn't solve the problem, so I just never went below 1/2 a tank. I didn't think of your pre filter idea but I think it's a good one. Your diver is lying to you, a common problem in that industry.

Dessel fuel is like jet fuel, it can grow fungus in the fuel. That is why most polish the fuel Or make sure there is an additive like Prist in the fuel

The divers I used in Titusville dove my boat every month and did a good job. I was there most of the times the were there. As I headed north to start the Great Loop, in Palm Coast one of the divers came over to make sure all was still fine. I hope we were using different divers? My recent haul out for prop shaft seal replacement showed the bottom still quite clean.

I have followed you now for a few years and I love your adventures and your videos
  • I had the same bad divers. Also I felt that in 1.5 years my paint had failed and diver could not keep up. Just went to a non ablative hard paint to handle the high water temps. The barnicles died the water was so hot here in Largo Fl. So far new paint works and self cleans at 18 mph.
  • thanks for great videos and content. You need a fuel polishing system, for cleaning your fuel in the tanks.
  • Does a “Clean” bottom have those white circles on it ? You leave the foundation and they will grow quickly . And if you are ok with white circles , don’t expect that prop to not vibrate or cavitate when running. You needed a haul out and a proper wash , scrape and sanding. Your diver can extend the time between haul out but isn’t going to prevent it . It does look like they skipped scraping the lower side of keel .
  • No way that is 3 weeks of build up. Dive company did not clean proper. Crazy

Wow - it looks like a trigger-fish has set up home in your bow-thruster. It's always amazed me just how quickly barnacles can build-up on a boat sometimes.
