StumperJumper Evo (21-22), Cascade Link and Tires Review. Setup tips, No nonsense.

Published 2022-04-14
In this review, I do a long-term review of my stumpjumper evo along with setup tips as this bike "likes" some settings that aren't typical. I also review the cascade link for the bike as well as lots of tires including Specialized's Eliminator and Butcher, Kenda Pinners, Maxxis Dissector and Assegai and Vittoria Mazzas. There probably is a bit of nonsense in there somewhere I guess...

Thanks for this. I just bought a 2022 Evo and did a first ride yesterday. Felt pretty good despite lots of rain and mud. For my local trails I am thinking I put it on the steep geometry but I haven’t tried it yet. Haven’t seen any decent videos on YouTube on how to do it so I will just have to figure it out.

Thanks for all of this information! I’m looking at building one of these up over the winter, and your info on the rear suspension is polar opposite from what I’ve learned on my Yeti. I’d have been fighting setup for quite a while trying to figure that out if I hadn’t found this video.
  • I have the 2022 S4 and agree with a lot of these set up tips. I did the same geo adjustments and liked the 64 low setting the most. running 165mm cranks. I also tried the mullet link, which I loved for certain applications.. but made the bike feel less wellrounded and had even less progression. So I went back to the 29er set up.
  • Good stuff, I have been struggling with my rear shock with issues like you, appreciate your setup tips, gonna try them. Also running Terra DHR2 and Assegai super soft front, let's see how they do. Next up, Kryptotal.

I rocked the specialized tires a few years ago and didn't like them. I know they made huge improvements, so I'm going to give them another shot. Best I ever found for me is dhr maxx terra double down and assagai max grip exo plus.
  • fucking loved this, truly enjoyed just sitting down and chillin away watching this video, you should do a more!

It seems were about the same height & weight and enjoy similar terrain and my experiences are almost identical as yours! I have seen a few comments around about not going larger than the .6 volume spacer on the DPX2 but any FOX documentation I've been able to dig up is only up to the 2020. I have not seen anything specific for the 2021/22 DPX2 so if you have something to share would love to see it! Note, I have run the largest 1.03 for sometime and have now recently settled for the 0.86 volume spacer, finding 28% sag was the sweet spot. I do find the Cascade naturally made the bike more planted (which is fine as I was 50/50 whether to go STEVO or Enduro) so if I was really wanting a little more playful feel I would stick with the stock link. I started low/slack then moved to high/slack and recently now in high/neutral. There's only been a couple occasions where I wished for slack but that's only on the steepest of steeps in the bottom g-outs... after sometime on this I plan to test out low/neutral just to check it out but for the daily setting I'll probably stick with high/neutral. I do really like the new T9 Butcher on the front and plan on replacing with another (or Assegai EXO+ Maxxgrip but is about $25 more for no real gain so stock dependent). The Eliminator was just ok and have gone back to the DD 3C Maxx-terror DHR2 for the rear! If I ever see those Vittoria Mazza's around sounds like it would be worth a test!
  • Hey mate I'm 5,9 too and I'm leaning towards a S4 stumpy evo with a 35 or 40mm stem. What's your thoughts on this? Did you compare s3 to the s4? Cheers
  • @thim8009
I built up a stumpy evo frame this winter and went with flip chip low steep head angle and installed 165 mm crank arms.
  • @shellderp
huh neat, why don't all eliminators have t7/t9 combo? Going to try a higher pressure in my rear shock now..
  • @alexkeyes1706
Does the bike climb way worse with cascade? I agree with all your experiences especially sag and geo settings

I have had this bike for the same period of time this review is the most on point review I have seen! I have had the same issues with the rear end and I’m like 175 with kit. It needs pressure and low speed compression. Trying to dial that in now. Im in the 63.5 head angle and I’m experiencing what you are experiencing with flatter corners. Literally was just thinking it go middle cup and low bb. I picked up 165 cranks too which helps a lot. The specialized front tire is solid! I have the Assegai now and I agree with you completely. The softer rubber is really nice on slabs but I have found it slides a tad with loose over hard especially with flatter turns where you are in that no mans zone. I’m figuring out how to trust it. The AGRESSOR 2.5 I just put on on the rear is absolutely killer! I’m running it in DD How much low speed are you running in the rear and how much sag not really applicable because I don’t have the cascade link yet 🙃 lol I’m debating it tho. And maybe going mullet! Have you thought about that one yet?
  • @Antjan46
Nice review, thanks for this. Do you have any experience with the 2020 Stumpjumper Carbon 29’r? I’ve got my heart set on the Troy Lee Limited Edition frame in my local bike shop. It comes with a DHX2 coil. Build will consist of components from the 2020 Stumpjumper Expert (but with alloy wheels) I’m not what the difference is with the 2021 version (is it just a different chain-stay design?) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

Your issue was the dpx2 not the frame. The dpx2 isn’t good for heavy guys I had the same problem switched to a float x which has bigger valving that can support heavier riders with less air pressure. I’m heavier tho at 250
  • @schlicss
@klinton silvey you still rocking the 50mm stem? I switched to a 40 and like the snappiness, but lost a little front end traction.
  • @gregsurat3734
Stumpy EVO vs Enduro to go racing? What do you think?
  • @justsayin3600
I've got a 2023 Evo Pro with Factory Float X rear. I just put a WRP yoke on it because I'm on mixed wheel. I'm 217lbs no gear. I don't have the issues you have. Your video is a prime example of 1 person's advice doesn't apply to everyone. This was painful to watch.
